Confused - my 3 other children applied all EA. My 4th really likes two - one of the schools had ED1 and ED2 and the other had just ED. Can DS apply ED to one school and also ED2 to the other school? He has all the other EA apps ready to go but not sure how to navigate what is allowed. He is not sure which one he likes better so therein lies the issue.
He can only apply ED2 to the second school if he is denied or deferred at the ED school. So the ED2 application will have to wait until he get his ED decision in December.
ETA: ED is a binding commitment. Only apply ED if it is affordable and the absolute top choice.
If he prefers to ED2 option to ED, then he should apply to that one ED and let the second school go. Why get bound to your second choice without hearing from the first ?
Oh, and you don’t need to ED to get in. Lots get in EA/RD depending on the schools. And anecdotally, if they offer merit aid, you would have less chance to get ED bcuz why give $ if you don’t need to.
Just to add on to the previous post.
Thanks - although counselor told him that with funding and international student admittance up in the air under the current administration (no politics, just saying what we were told) they think that schools would be more likely to go with a “sure thing” ie a student who is ED and then will be bound to go to that school. However as one of the two schools is bumping the $90k mark and the other is just below $60k we may already have our choice made as $90k is not an amount we can handle.
Have you run the NPC ? Maybe your cost will be less.
Yes many schools like ED. Holy Cross, as an example, has an ED rate multiples of RD.
Depends on the school. If you want to name ….
Most schools don’t have a ton of ED relative to the overall class. Some do but not most.
I think given the issues, more RD spots will open. But that’s overall, not school specific.
Maybe do a chance me. Get a more clean slate of opinions.
A lot of ED though is all about FUUD - an old marketing technique.
Most schools need you more than you need them.
You should only apply ED if either you are fine being full pay, or the NPC shows the school as being affordable. If one school is likely to cost $90,000/year, and if you cannot afford it, then just do not apply there ED.
There are quite a few of us who have academically very strong children, who make too much to qualify for need based financial aid, but who just cannot afford to pay for a school that costs $90,000/year or more. Generally our kids just go somewhere else (and in our experience and many family’s experience do very well).
We did not apply ED anywhere due to some combination of preferring a school where merit aid would be needed for affordability, applying to schools that do not have ED, and not being sure what the number 1 choice was. It worked out well anyway. This is normal.
The big fallacy is you can only go if you apply ED. It’s a farce.
It may be directionally that way at some but even schools that fill 60% ED, and that’s very few, have to let in many EA or RD because the yields are much lower.
Can he not apply to both and withdraw the ED2 app if accepted at first choice? Just wondering what happens if the ED1 announcement date comes out after the ED2 application deadline. Not seeing how this is necessarily different from pulling all the other apps once getting first ED decision.
- ED(1) decisions come out in December and ED2 deadlines typically are mid-January
- If I recall correctly, colleges that offer both ED1 and 2 don’t accept ED2 applications until after they’ve released ED1 decisions
Yes - our other 3 children went to schools that made both financial and academic sense even though all 3 were very strong academically and EC - all three are gainfully employed or one their way now pursuing great careers in areas they chose. Thanks this helps thinking it through with someone other then by DH and I - we are going a bit nuts and thankful this is our last one to go through this process!
The ED1 is late Dec and ED2 is early Feb from what I have seen.
The schools are Bentley U and UConn. He has the ability to get into both (per his counselor) without going into details but doing ED really increases his changes by double digits for Bentley if he goes that route. I have not run the NPC but did so about 30 times with my 3 other kids and it was always very disappointing as we are in that sweet spot of making too much but having $90k be out of our reach. I will run them tonight just in case thanks
Edit - crap - I was looking at the #s wrong. My bad. Their set up was different.
11,011 applied
4,961 admitted
45% admit.
Overall yield 21%.
665 RD out of 4324 so 15% yield RD.
Only 21% submit a test - so if you have a good one, that helps.
ED, to me, brings two risks:
- Less chance of $$
- You’re not sold
If you are and unconcerned with $$, then it’s ok - if it’s #1.
If Bentley didn’t work out, there’s always Bryant.
Three different schools. I wish you well.
Yes Bryant is on the list. It is $ though as well and not quite on par with UConn or Bentley but it is on the list!
