Hi, I am an incoming freshman for the NYU class of 2011. I realize that I am not a parent but I nevertheless humbly ask for help.
I received an email last night saying I had not paid my housing deposit, even though I actually did indeed pay it. I even received a separate email 2 days before that one giving me a receipt for my payment as well as a confirmation number. Unfortunately I cannot talk to anyone at NYU because I get out of school after the office closes (time difference in California), and up until now I naturally thought they had received the deposit because they sent me a receipt. Is there anything I can do right now? I left a message, but by the time anyone gets it it’ll be too late- this is really really really really ****ing me off and I’d really hate to lose my reserved housing because of something stupid like this. Thanks!

Can you email? Forward the email receipt?

Email them back immediately with the information that you paid your housing deposit and include the confirmation number and the person who sent you the email. Many times, two different groups are handling different parts of a procedure. The left hand really doesn’t know what the right hand is doing.

Get that piece of the puzzle in motion.

As for making a phone call: The kids at our public high school can use the phone in the College and Career Center to make phone calls to colleges (even long distance ones) during school hours.

Get up early and call NYU. Make the 3 hour difference work for you!

Have a parent call for you. I know that seems bush now that you are close to being an adult, but sometimes it’s better than not making a phone call at all. Plus, people back east realize that the west coast kids can’t always make the call themselves. Plus it is the parents who are often paying that $$ anyway. They are the ones who know when the money was sent, if the check was cashed, etc.

Print out whatever you have and fax them hard copies

And set your alarm for early tomorrow a get up and use the phone, there is an AM you know, you could have called this morning at 7am, so why in the world did you not call this morning,

k mom nag over

I do realize that I could have called this morning. I just thought for some reason my mom didn’t pay the deposit (I have no idea why), but when I saw the receipt today it was too late. Nevertheless, I have left a message explicitly stating my situation as well as an email with a copy of the receipt.

Do you think they would let me keep my housing even though tomorrow is the cutoff? I do realize I should have called this morning but I still think the bulk of the blame falls on NYU. Thanks!

Try to relax…chances are, if your deposit was paid, you have a receipt, and there was a mix-up, then, there are going to be several such mix-ups, in addition to people who actually have not paid - meaning, they will have sent such notification to a LOT of people, and, with graduations, high school seniors busy with the end of the school year, and east coasters who got out of school before Memorial Day and may be on vacation this week and not even in a position to respond, the housing isn’t going to fill up in the space of two days.

So get up early, plan to call them at 6:00 a.m. PST, and then go back to bed and sleep for another hour when you finish your phone call.
