Help Expand my List?

Hi everyone! I’m new to CC so I hope I’m posting this in the right place. With the impending wave of ED/EA decisions coming my way I’m starting to get worried about admission, like any stressed out Senior. I’m trying to think if there’s any schools I could apply to by Jan 1 so I have some more options if my ED doesn’t work out (I find out next week). Could anyone reccomend some other schools like ones on my list? I’m a girl looking to study history. Would prefer in the South but obviously from my list I’m not limiting myself to that. Merit and Financial Aid is not a factor.

Current List:
• Tulane (ED)
• University of Miami (EA)
• Fordham (EA)
• SMU (EA)
• University of San Francisco (EA)
• Ole Miss (already accepted, is my safety)
• NYU
• Lehigh
• Harvard (family obligation to apply)

For history, two schools that come to mind are William & Mary and Gettysburgh.

Academically, Kenyon would suit you (strong in history and perhaps a match for you based on your other choices). Furman and Centre are in the South and would be less selective options.

NYU, Ole Miss, USF, Tulane…your choices are all over the place in terms of size, location, setting, atmosphere, etc. What characteristics are you looking for in a college?

There are dozens if not hundreds of colleges with strong history programs, though they vary in their specialties and strengths. Some focus on US history and African-American history, for example, whereas others excel in Middle Eastern, African, and/or East Asian history. Each year great universities turn out way more history PhDs than can get jobs, so even run-of-the-mill colleges often have some top-notch faculty.

I suspect you know this, but if you’re rejected from Tulane ED, you almost certainly won’t get into Harvard.

@bailey2000, have you worked with your guidance counselor to put together your list of target, reach and match schools?

Florida & Florida State?

@warblersrule I’m looking mainly for colleges in urban settings, with flexibility in studies (relatively easy to try double majoring or triple majoring even). I would ideally want an actual campus, which is why I have reservations about NYU. Tulane’s my perfect school, and I really like UoM but don’t like the city of Miami much. I like the work hard play hard atmosphere at those schools. In terms of specific history I like medieval and early modern History. I’d prefer a medium sized school.

I’m sorry for not elaborating earlier. There are a lot of exceptions on my list for a variety of reasons… Ole Miss is a backup I don’t intend on going to, but my HS requires we apply to a big state school we’re guaranteed entry to basically. USF is a backup academically but a family friend has sung it’s praises. NYU is somewhat of a family obligation apply as well.

Also, yeah I understand I’m never getting into Harvard, but my grandpa thinks his donations will get me in which is why he made me apply (even though I try to tell him I won’t). I probably should’ve left off the schools on my list I’m not as excited about.

@Chembiodad Yes, extensively. I’m afraid my limitations I gave her at the start of our talks Junior year meant she hadn’t recommended a lot of possible options though (I was pretty strict about an urban setting). Tulane is a slight reach while Fordham and SMU are solid targets, and USF is a safety.

@bailey2000, agree that a grandparent legacy won’t matter unless he’s got a building named after him, but I think everyone understands why it remains on your list. While your last posting provides a lot of insight as to preference, It’s hard to provide guidance without an understanding of your academic profile, the EC’s you were involved in, etc.

@Chembiodad I hesitate to give my stats just because my HS is pretty skewed in terms of difficulty. I go to a very competitive private school in NC. Most of the colleges I’ve spoken to are very aware of my school’s rigor and know that my GPA would be higher if I went to a different school, and two reps from competitive schools had personally told me that they are excited to recruit kids from my school because they know they’ll be a good fit. Suffice it to say, my Naviance school scattergrams are much better to look at than the national averages for schools. I’ll give it anyways though.

GPA: 3.83 UW (school is on a 4.0 scale)
SAT: 1300 (high english score, rough math score)
Class Rank: N/A (school does not rank)
ECs: Ballroom dance for 11 years, Editor in Chief of School Newspaper & Online Newsite (reporter for four years, news editor for three), Reporter for nationally ranked School Broadcast, Reporter for my school’s sports feature magazine, lots of service (I’ve focused on one charity/non-profit freshman and sophomore year, for the past two years I’ve putting in a lot of time helping an organization raise awareness for ovarian cancer), small speaking roles in various films and tv shows, I’ve been in my school’s book club since 6th grade and am a discussion leader, I beta read for a YA novelist, JV volleyball manager for two years, babysitting about 8 hours a week, and I worked at a donut store as a clerk for a summer. I also was an exchange student in South Africa.

I put a lot of time into my essays, especially my personal statement which my college counselor is using as an example of how to tackle tough topics in her future workshops.

@bailey2000, understand. So if Tulane is a slight reach and you want an urban setting then how about Boston University?

Another choice could be Wake Forest, although it’s not urban.

@Chembiodad I’ll look into BU! I’ll admit I’ve mentally blocked Boston from my mind because of my grandpa’s nagging about Harvard, but that would be a good option.

While Wake would probably be a good option, I’m avoiding NC schools for the abundance of students that attend them from my HS. It’s the same reason I’m not applying to Chapel Hill. Wake and Chapel Hill are the most popular at my HS in terms of attendance.

@bailey2000, despite your grandfather’s “loving” nagging, he’s right at least about Boston as it’s become a very cool city separate from being the home to so many colleges which is probably what it was limited to when he went there - the city’s now full of high tech companies and the scale of the city and surrounding areas like Cambridge are very pedestrian friendly.

Look at colleges in Boston for more urban options.

Univ of Richmond?

Seconding Kenyon, Centre, Gettysburg, and URichmond. What about Emory?

Is New College of Florida too small for you? What about Davidson?

Thanks for everyone’s advice! I got into my ED school so fortunately I’m done applying places!
