ok so i am about to start my senior year of high school and during my freshman and sophomore years i didnt care about my grades and that has caused me to have a VERY low GPA and i was wondering if their was some colleges that would accept someone with a lower GPA than normal.

Yeah, colleges try to look at you as a person and decide if they want to accept you. I mean, it’s going to look bad that you got very low grades because you didn’t care, but it’s not like you’re ruined. You should still apply to the schools you want to go to and see what happens. But at most schools, grades are very important factors in admissions.

I think that if you look back at your underclass years, and are able to evaluate why you “didn’t care,” you might be able to work that into an essay or some other piece of your application. Did you experience some kind of change in high school, did you reprioritize…can you speak of an epiphany of some sort that made you realize the importance of applying yourself? Instead of letting the college see you didnt care, and now do…because its closer to application time…you might be able to use this to show that you are introspective, more mature…that you grew as a student and person over the past few years. Though I don’t think the most prestigious colleges will disregard a lower average, just because its so competitive, a solid, worthy institution might value your honesty and take you as someone who will work harder in higher education.
