Help: Going into 11th SATs

Hi,

I am going into 11th and I know that I will have to take the SATs this year.

The only experience I have is taking the PSAT last October.

What should I do this year in preparation, I have gotten brochures on SAT prep courses in the fall, also one for a PSAT this fall, what should I do? Take the prep courses and the PSAT in the fall and then maybe the SAT this spring?

My weighted GPA is 3.26 and UW is 3.22. I don’t do any sports or any clubs and I know I have to start getting involved with clubs, (I’m no good at sports).

So with that GPA do you think I could get in Hofstra?

Thanks for your help,

Steve

That is one of the best prep methods I know of above.

You may want to ignore the nonsense that breaks out with an argument about the value of prep courses and private tutors.

Though, to be honest, unless you really feel like you need the help or the money is no concern, I would suggest not going through with those prep courses. Though that’s just me. Different people learn differently and maybe they’ll be beneficial to you.

just don’t waste your money too much in the program b/c the real work will only be done by you. The tutors and learning setting will just allow you to focus. I know that my friend used one of these unknown sat prep programs, and when she took their test, she scored above 2000. Then when she took the real test, she didn’t score too well.

Your GPA is fine for Hofstra, just score around a 600 on each section and you should be set. I would suggest self studying for the SAT

Alright thanks guys,

I’ll look into it.

The thing is, I just don’t know where to start. It’s not that money is no issue (at all), but my parents are willing to chip in to for the SAT as they know it is big.

And also, you think that GPA is good for Hofstra? I sure as hell hope so…, I worry every day about it cause I am just not involved with sports and clubs and stuff.

Also,

Two more questions:

I am about to start 11th in two weeks, haven’t done any prep for SAT, when do you recommend I take the SAT and when should I start studying?

thanks again,
Steve

Start doing vocabulary words from one of the lists(internet search, books, Practice test, etc) now so you can try and learn hundreds of new words by the test. This would mean having a goal of learning 20 words a week for 10 weeks as an example.

I would get the college board blue book. go through the sections and take a test to see were you are. Then correct your mistakes and repeat the process all over again. The PSAT test is taken in October. Did you sign up? Taking it in sophamore year doesn’t count for national merit.

Take the SAT in March or as early as January. You can take a second test at the end of the school year.

Buy Direct Hits for vocabulary. It’s the best book.

Buy the Official College Board STudy Guide (Blue Book) and take practice tests - learn from mistakes - figure out what was wrong - etc. If you need help, post a thread on this forum.
