So I got up at 7am to try to add CS H195 cause it says the “lines were full” last night before midnight. I was able to click on the “Add a class” link unlike last night but once I clicked “Continue”, it keeps saying that the “Prior transaction has been cancelled.” What does that mean?

I’m also confused about the waitlist. CS H195 still has 15 available seats yet there are 10 people on the waitlist. I really want to add this class. I was planning on attending the first day of classes but the location is still TBA.

Ok I was finally able to add it after several attempts. Thank god cause I dropped another class just to be able to add it. But I’m still confused about the waitlist. Why is there a waitlist when there is still room?

The remaining available seats are likely reserved.

Ughh this is so frustrating. I was already on the waitlist. Next thing I thing I know it’s gone. I think it dropped me…

Often it is because the class has multiple categories for registration - and those on the waitlist match categories that are full already. You find this out by clicking on the little link at the bottom of the entry for each class on schedule.berkeley.edu for seeing the restrictions and current enrollment.

The class seems to have only one category - those with majors of CS or EECS - and it is full. Anyone with those majors can register but they go on the waitlist. The size of that category is less than the full class size, which is why it isn’t full to the overall capacity of 22 seats. There are no open seats in any category (in this case the one single category they have listed), but when classes are offered by category like this you MUST match a category to register without waitlisting. No way to match unless one person with a CS or EECS major drops the class.

Likely they will take people off the waitlist by reviewing their situation, since it is a manual waitlist not automatic. As long as the waitlist doesn’t grow larger than the 15 remaining actual seats, everyone should get in. However, if the waitlist gets bigger than that, then some won’t clear on day one and might need to wait for drops. Contact the professor to make your case for why you should be accepted into the class right at the start, if you have a reasonable justification.

I’m an EECS major so I should’ve been able to register ._.
Sorry I’m still a little confused when you said that “those on the waitlist match categories that are full already”. There are still spots…But since you said that everyone should get in, guess I shouldn’t worry. Only problem now is how to get back on the waitlist without being dropped again.

No, I am saying that when something has “Restrictions: By Category” then you can’t go by the overall seats available, all that matters is the category you match. Click on “Click Here for Current Enrollment and Course Restrictions” to see the categories.

In this case, the course has only one category (kinda unusual, you either have several or it is not restricted by category). For the category “Students with a major of Computer Science or Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences” they have set up some number of seats and they are all taken. It is full.

In this case, the number of seats in the category is less than the total seats set up for the class. Probably it is set up for 7 people. All 7 have registered. It is full. Even though the entire class claims to support up to 22 people, there is only one category to register under and that category has just 7 spaces. There is no way to register for the 15 open seats, unless the category is expanded beyond 7 or they add additional categories or clear someone manually or make some other change.

If you are not on the waitlist and really confirmed the choice, then the professor or department dropped you. That happens if they feel you have not met the conditions or pre-reqs for the course. None listed on the course catalog - but it is up to the department or professor.

Thanks for the long explanation. I just emailed the professor and told me that the class is going to be cancelled.
