My Samsung 3 is biting the dust. My husband’s is also on its way out. My husband doesn’t like I-phones, so what would some of you suggest. I don’t need the newest, so a Samsung 5 would be fine. We are also looking at the LG phone. We have ATT because that is what gets the best coverage in our area. I am not joined at the hip with my phone so there are a lot of things that I don’t use it for. New phones seem to come out monthly, so it is hard to figure out what is good. I want one with a long battery life. Any suggestions would be great. Would love pros and cons. Thank you in advance.
We’ve had apple tablets and pads of various flavors for years. We got our first smartphone this month … a Lumia WIndows Phone. I like it. Works fine. Not as many apps, but I do other things between fiddling with it.
Nokia always made decent hardware, and although they’ve been bought by Microsoft, it still seems decently thought out.
My husband has. MotoX which is great.

We have moto G phones and use consumer cellular for our phone plan which is AT&T.

Bought our phones at Target for $100 each . They are awesome. The no contract plan is awesome and cheap.
Highly recommend.
I’ll post this once and then people can ignore this but I won’t buy Samsung products anymore because the Lee family, which controls Samsung, had some resistance to their decision to consolidate control by merging in another Samsung entity, Samsung C&T, and chose to use blunt Jew-baiting as their tactic (because one of the shareholder dissidents was an investment group with a Jewish CEO). They portrayed him as “Vulture Man” in a series of cartoons, which they actually put up the C&T website, and used a PR to generate a series of Jew-hating articles in the Korean press. This included a weird smear of the Korean shareholder analysis group - whose name escapes me at the moment - that they’re similar to a NY shareholder analysis group which was “founded” by “Jewish money.” This went on for weeks and then the NY Observer was clued in and ran an article. Samsung kept it up and then the WSJ and other major publications picked up the story and suddenly Samsung took down the racist cartoons and issued a feeble statement about opposing hatred. You can search for stories about this using “Vulture Man”, New York Observer, etc.
And the thing is the merger would have gone through. This was a choice of tactics.
So I won’t buy their crap.
I had my Samsung III repaired recently, the guy told me to replace it with the Samsung 4 active. But I am on a trip wtih my sister and her iPhone 6 takes the most amazing photos, I am not even using my camera! I am thinking hard about this one.
I don’t know anything about phones but I have an iPhone 4 I’ve dropped it on tile, the screen cracked but it still fully functions. I’ve dropped it completely submerged in water 3 times, no damage, still functions totally fine. I’m surprised how well it’s held up and how well constructed it is. So, just on how well it’s manufactured, I’m impressed with what Apple did with iPhone 4.
I’ve been thinking about the moto g. can’t bring myself to spend $6-700 on a phone and I never seem to use all the bells and whistles on the higher priced versions of things.
I have an HTC One M8 that I got in January. Battery life is excellent, pictures are good and it was really easy to learn how to use. And it’s got a cool case that can be tapped and will display the time and weather, among other options
Friends don’t let friends buy Android phones. They leak your personal data like a sieve. Look at the news this week. http://www.forbes.com/sites/ewanspence/2015/07/31/android-news-digest-stagefright-security-danger-moto-g-oneplus-2/
I got an iPhone 6 a couple of weeks ago after years of using, and loving, my Blackberry. I now wonder why I waited so long! I am loving it. Easy to use, versatile, and the camera is every bit as good as the actual camera I have.
I have been an Android fan and really like having the ability to change the battery on my Galaxy S5 (always carry a charged spare). But As noted by Iron Maiden, there have been frequent major security flaws publicized. Google can create fixes for these, but I believe updates have to be pushed out by the cell phone manufacturers to the carriers, and it takes months. The latest flaw is that a malicious user can take over your phone by sending you a text message with an attached video. In most cases you do not even have to open the text, and an attacker can then take over the phone and delete the message so you may not even realize that you were a victim. Because IPhone has one manufacturer , IOS updates are pushed out faster. Next time I buy a phone, this will definitely be a consideration.
I like smaller phones that I can stick in my pocket easily so I have the Samsung S5 mini and have been happy. At times I think a larger keyboard would be nice, but I’m willing to sacrifice that for the small size of the phone. Really it is personal preference.
To resist such cracks, do the following:
- Turn off auto-retrieve of MMS messages/media in Messenger, Hangouts, or whatever messaging application is in your phone.
- Consider switching to TextSecure or similar SMS/MMS application that does not pre-process any media with the vulnerable library and warns you if you click to play the type of media that can exploit the vulnerability.
- Obviously, do not click on audio or video that you receive.
Buy a brand new LG G2 gsm phone on eBay for under $200 and then put a sim in it from AT&t’s Cricket Wireless and you’ll be all set for $35/mo.
I have a Samsung Note 3 and an iPhone 5s.
I am waiting a few weeks for the new Samsung Note 5 to come out (rumored to be released towards the end of this month). It has some fabulous new features.
If you get a Samsung, then consider also getting the watch as well. I LOVE my watch. It has its own phone number, but it also syncs with my phone so I can receive and send messages, emails, calls, etc from my watch. You can make calls from the watch using either phone number, and of course receive calls from either number. LOVE it!!!
