On the short answer, my answer was within the character limit shown underneath the window, but it was over the limit they have in the question (150 words). I sent the application last night online- will the colleges have a cut-off answer? Should I email them the full piece of writing?

Also, if anyone reading this is applying to Dartmouth: I have sent the application, supplement, and school forms, however I have not sent the peer reference yet. My friend sent it by courier from India recently. Do I have to have it postmarked by today or do they allow leeway? I can also scan it and send it electronically if necessary. Oh and what address should I send it to? Sorry if that’s a stupid question.

How many words over the limit was it? I imagine that you’d probably be fine up to 200 or 250 words, maybe even a bit over that. If they don’t like it, it’s not the end of the world. It’ll probably have very little effect on their decision (if it has any at all).

They ask that the commom app short answer is limited to 150 words. However the box allows for a lot more than that. Plenty of people are writing longer responses …it doesn’t “cut off”. You can check this by going back and printing out the app, if it makes you feel better.

The character limit in the box is caused by limitations of coding for the web. Colleges set the word limit. While there is no character limit, it’s generally a better idea to follow directions.

About your Dartmouth question- the people on the Dartmouth boards said that it should be okay if the peer recommendation is a little bit late. Most colleges give leeway with the stuff that you can’t control.
