Help identify suitable colleges?

Stats
3.7 GPA UW (not ideal, I know) in toughest courses
39/42 IB
1500 CR + M / 2250
Strong upward trend
Essay and supplements received great response from counsellors; possibly strongest area
ECs with focus on community service, art, and leadership/entrepreneurship

Potential majors/minors in studio art/art history, economics, english, french.

Currently like Brown, Vassar, Oberlin, Cornell, Bard. I didn’t have a great experience at Wes.

Location wise, preferably east coast but open to others as well.

Social: I’d like to avoid a college where greek life is central to social life or where party scene is big. I’d like somewhere liberal, open, accepting. Not rural; access to city.

Financial aid not needed.

Need help identifying safety schools and match schools.

Trinity, Holy Cross.

safeties must be absolutely affordable, absolutely some place one will get into, absolutely some place one will attend if all else fails, and, of course, have one’s major.

so what will your family’s expected contribution be? have you run the net price calculators?

what is your state flagship?

@jkeil911 Full contribution. I’m an international student.

Cornell University is in a small town, and has a fairly large fraternity and sorority scene (28% of men and 24% of women, according to http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/cornell-university-2711</a> ).

@ucbalumnus Yup I realise, and I find that some of the colleges that I’m looking at are rather different in certain aspects. But when I consider them as a whole, they are places that I would like to spend four years at.

ah, of course, nice 39/42, OP. Barnard, Hamilton, Vassar, Oberlin, Reed, Bryn Mawr, CMU, NYU, Macalester, Northeastern, Wellesley, Hopkins, Colby, Tulane, Miami, ColoradoC, Occidental, USC. These are matches or safeties.

I did have a poor term in junior year, amassing poor scores in maths and sciences. But my trend throughout has been upward, and my GPA has maintained at the 3.7 mark.

@jkeil911 Would you mind letting me know which ones would be safeties for me? Also my impression is that Macalester is very selective for international students?

NYU, Northeastern, Tulane, Miami, ColoradoC, Brandeis

Thanks! Anyone else?

Other small liberal arts colleges that have good art studio/art history departments: Williams, Hamilton, Conn College, Haverford, Skidmore, Kenyon, Pitzer. If you are female, Smith, Bryn Mawr, Holyoke.

What was it that you didn’t like about Wesleyan?

Cornell seems out of place on your list: Great school but big, rural, and strong emphasis on Greek.

If art is an important to you, you should include an art portfolio as a supplement to your application, even if you’re not sure you will major in art.

It’s difficult to predict chances for internationals since you are basically competing with other internationals for limited spaces. From my list, Conn College, Skidmore, Pitzer and Smith would be the least selective. Your nationality, ethnicity/religion and life experience will play a big part in admissions. Being full-pay will also be a positive.

I would keep an open mind about rural/small town locations – many remotely located colleges have excellent art/art history facilities and strong museum connecitons (like Williams, Skidmore, Hamilton, Kenyon, Smith) . The rural colleges tend to get relatively fewer international applicants than urban schools do.

If you have a top choice, you should consider applying ED. Hopefully you’ll be able to visit first, though.

I wasn’t very impressed by my Wesleyan tour guides and the campus on my visit, though I’m told its supposedly quite like Vassar.

Thank you for the list. I’m also seriously considering Kenyon and Hamilton, and will arrange for a visit.

Two other good schools, esp. for writing.
