Hello. I really need as much help as I can get. Thank you. My current average is an 88.57 and I want to get into the Grove School of Engineering at CCNY (CUNY). My problem is that every time is take SAT practice tests I always end up getting 550/800 on the math section, although I’m looking for at least a 650, I keep getting the same grades every time. Can someone please help me :(? Also can you recommend anything to me on how to make my application better. Thank you so much!
The Gruber preparation books are good for SAT prep. You also might benefit from taking a SAT course given your score and since self studying does not seem to be helping you. You need more feedback than you can give yourself if you are just getting a 550.
How is your Math classes at school? To prep for a high Math score in SAT is not impossible. However, it may not help you to survive in engineering school later on. If you are doing okay in Math at school but just not doing well in the practice test, it could be just a test skill issue.
Thanks alot guys! Really appreciative of your comments, & help.
I would get the Blue Book and work your way through the math portions of it. Anything you get wrong make sure to clearly understand before moving on to the next test.
You can improve by
- analyzing your mistakes- figure out what went wrong for each wrong answer. If you need to learn some math, then that’s what you need to do.
- the more practice you do, (blue book), the faster you’ll be and you’ll also start recognizing certain types of questions so you’ll know what strategy to use- you won’t need to waste time thinking what to do.
My kids both practiced using the blue book.

Honestly, what worked for me was just taking practice tests over and over again. As mentioned above^, the Blue Book has 10 (12?) tests with keys you can take. If you have the money, you can also sign up for a course at your local college prep center; they probably have licensed old tests bought from The College Board that you can take once a week until your test. I did this over a couple of months and boosted my score from 1960 to 2310, so I guess it worked. Good luck!
Thanks a lot guys!
