What is your view of the concept that people construct barriers to keep themselves hidden from the world around them?

Response (word for word for the most part)

An ancient proverb states that, “Those who do not venture, stay hidden, only due to the walls they create.” It is an idiosyncratic tendency for human beings to construct barriers in order to hide themselves from fear and failure. The negative effects of these barriers are particularily evident through examination of the play, “Death of a Salesman,” and through the lives of Pierre Trudeau and Warrick Dunn.

Arthur Miller’s scintillating play, “Death of a Salesman,” epitomizes this belief. The tragic hero, Willy Lohman, is overwhelmed by the lack of success his family achieved. This leads him to an extreme form of depression. During the play it is clear to the audience that Willy uses old memories and former happiness to hide himself from the world. Thus, instead of facing his troubles, Willy hides behind this self created barrier. Unfortunately for the Lohman family, this only exacerbates Willy’s mental problem and he is led to the act of suicide.

Another example of a negative effect created through the barriers can be examined through Canada’s 15th Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau. Trudeau was looked at as being somewhat ostentatious and to a certain extent, distant from the every day Canadian. It was not until his later years when Trudeau finally opened up to the public. He claimed his aloof character was created due to his insecurity in himself. Thus, he felt the need to create a barrier to “protect” himself from the Canadian landscape. This barrier, however, had a negative effect on his political career.

A final example of the negative effects of these self-imposed barriers can be seen through NFL star Warrick Dunn. Warrick’s mother was shot and killed in the line of duty when Warrick was just 16 years old. Already without a father, the death of his mother forced Warrick to form a cynical and callous outlook on life. He created a barrier to protect himself from future dissapointment. However, once put in the media spotlight, Warrick was critisized and looked down upon due to his inability to open up. It was not untill Warrick was able to break these negative barriers that people realized the true, warm hearted Warrick.

Through, “Death of a Salesman,” Pierre Trudeau, and Warrick Dunn it is evident that these self-imposed barriers effect a person negatively. They promote a person to have a callous outlook on life, and only exacerbate situations. Aristotle once proclaimed that, “One who is not free with others, will not be free with themselves.”
