I’m struggling to decide between USC and NYU Courant for Master’s in Computer Science. How do the two programs compare? USC will come out to around $52,000 a year and NYU will be around $35,000 a year since I don’t need housing. Is USC worth the extra debt?
The main reasons I see for applying to one over the other
- a specialization you are interested in
- leaning to working on west coast v east coast so ease of recruiting/job hunting --although of course you can get looked at for jobs on the opposite side or in between for that matter. But employers will just be more used to hiring within the region and you will have a bit stronger network within the region.
Nah, USC ain’t worth the debt. Stay with NYU.
USC isn’t worth it. NYU has a very respected CS department in the Courant Institute; they are so close in the rankings as to be pretty much the same; and $20K isn’t a small amount of money. Plus, New York is one of the hubs of the tech world; there will be plenty of opportunity to network your way into tech internships here in the city. USC is in Southern California, and it’s my understanding that most of the tech jobs on the West Coast are in Northern California.
^^just to add, there are tons of tech jobs in the Southland too. There is even an area called Silicon Beach. There is netflix, snapchat, Hulu, startups and a lot of mainstream companies in the area too, aerospace, film hire tech people too.
I think I’ll go to NYU, not 100% sure yet though. Anyway, thanks for the advice!
