Help me decide- UNC [$40k for 4 years] vs UofSC [<$10k for 4 years] vs BS/MD [$80k for 4 years]

Rhodes is in Memphis,TN… we are in DC…But it was best LECOM option that we could afford with a good vibe per my DD.

 no idea why they feel like that , Duke is the dream , close Emory and Vandy , the only down side we see of taking UofSC and UNC is , the plan B will be not so good , as UNC has public health and other options

Your daughter has two affordable and perfectly fine undergrad options.

She has a BS/MD program with affordable undergrad. How much is the medical school part? Plus, if it isn’t a school she would otherwise have chosen, does she really want to spend 7-8 years there?

I do not know enough about FAU. Did you check how many accepted students into BS/MD students actually go to MD? What is stats? 90%, 70% or 50%? If it is 50% I would not go…

The med school is 400k , which we will be able to manage , not easy option as parents as we have to stay away for us , but want to make the kid successful , being ORM , it is tough to get into medical colleges as I hear now… the biggest -ve I see of FAU is the undergrad school has no vibe

I’m not sure what you mean. Both U of SC and UNC have tons of majors that can be part of Plan B.

From what I heard and after talking to the kids who are attending , the chances of getting in are pretty high if they meet the requirements, they know only few kids who did get in after interview. So 80 to 90% if they can complete the requirements, they have max plank and Scripps research collaboration

Your student needs to be a happy undergrad. Not one who is attending a school they don’t like with no “vibe”. Happy students do much better in college than unhappy ones. And remember, that’s 7-8 years at this place with no vibe.

You realized that LECOM is cheaper… I know it is not on the table…
So you are ready to commit to ok school with huge requirements and huge later cost…

I was comparing UNC and UofSC , UNC has better plan B with their Public health school major and UofSC not a direct plan B. As moomsearcheng mentioned , UofSC is better option for premed , and UNC is better for plan B

Yes, assuming it works out. Most of the recommendations are send to the school where the kid will be happy and I wonder if that is the case for FAU.

I understand your child is a strong student. I still would go with less pressure option. Huge pressure with weed out is not good option. I would go to lesser school but better GPA and free.

Last question. What is your child wants? Where is the best vibe?

https://www.aamc.org/media/6091/download says that 56.7% of applicants with 3.60-3.79 GPA and 510-513 MCAT were admitted to MD medical schools in the US, so not a sure thing at that level of GPA and MCAT.

I wish I know the answer , as it keeps on changing , wants to be MD is the only thing for now. It is more of my gut feeling if any kid can be happy at FAU as it is so small for honors program

Yes, FAU medical school had average of 516 MCAT and higher GPA 3.8 and this school is not even in top 100 ranking and being ORM makes it tougher

Another thing to consider. BS/MD not BS/MD, I personally know a lot of premed kids that got burned. One was considering suicide… One completed almost all requirements and chaged major (“enough is enough, I do not want life like that”).
Because of all of the above we chose lesser sure thing with LECOM.
You have it too, you just want higher ranking… It comes with big mental cost…
Happiness and mental health of my child is my first priority.

I would rank (I do not know cost of the first one)

  1. Washington and Jefferson with LECOM.
  2. BSMD with FAU
  3. UofSC
  4. UNC
due to ORM. Otherwise I would switch 2 and 3. But let your child decide.

Is your kid’s only Plan B public health? There are lots of kids with great careers who were not anticipating medical school who graduate from South Carolina. Lots.

What does she want as a major? That could define her plan B. Things like math open up lots of Plan B options. UNC and S Carolina both offer a multitude of majors.

If this kid does not like FAU, it will be a LONG 8 years there. Residencies can be anywhere from 3-7 or more years. And residency isn’t exactly a walk in the park. I personally vote for your kid choosing an undergrad that they like, and would be happy to be at for our undergrad years.

Re: cost…UNC and SC pretty much cover most of her costs. With $400,000 already in the bank, you will likely have that amount for medical school even after paying some costs for undergrad. The account should be earning interest…and it seems you won’t be paying more than the interest earned.

If she wants to do something health related as a plan B, I would urge you to have her read this sure I’m linking.

I just want to add…the journey through medical school is very tough. The first two years are nothing but study study study and go to class, and take tests. And take tests that you have to pay for too. Very little time for a lot of fun. After the first summer, your kid won’t even get a summer vacation until sometime during residency. Please think about all of this when your kid is picking undergrad. Like I said above, I think life is way too short to give up four years at a place you don’t like just because you think you want to attend medical school at this place (that you don’t like).

@WayOutWestMom @twogirls what have I left out?
