I’ve been looking for a quote that would convey my message, but I can’t find one. I bascially want to say that “To master the present, you have to master the past. And to master the future, you have to master the present.” I’m pretty sure I’ve heard it somewhere before, but I just can’t find out who actually said it. Thanks for the help

Oh thanks pundit. I thought about that one, but it’s not exactly what I mean. This Orwell quote focuses more on power and control. My essay focuses more on overcoming the past in order to live a better life in the present. For instance, something happened to me in the past, and I never actually processed it (because it was too shocking or whatever), so my present is kinda held back by it. But as soon as I work through this event in the past, I can finally move on. That’s what I mean. I don’t know if anyone has read “The Remains of the Day”, but if you have you’ll know what I’m talking about.

I know there probably isn’t exactly what you wanted in your first post, but it seems like a simple quote about letting go of past mistakes/tragedies/ whatever would suit you just fine.
