I’m a student from Illinois and have kept an eye on many colleges in the midwest, but would also like to research colleges in California and Texas. Can someone please point out some reaches, matches, and safeties in both of those states? Thank you for taking the time to read this and helping me out!

If money isn’t an issue, look at some UCs (Berkeley and UCLA are big reaches, but most of the others are matches if you apply to the regular colleges instead of specialized programs) and Occidental. Try to calculate your UC-weighted GPA. They have their own formula. You need to be over 4.0 to be competitive at the more elite campuses. If you had good grades in core academic subjects during your sophomore and junior years, then you are probably in range, outside of UCLA, UCB, and possibly UCSD. UT-Austin is probably a reach for you from out-of-state, but not impossible. SMU might be a match. If you’re looking at Texas, you might as well apply to Tulane, also.

Here is the link for the UC GPA Calculator:<a href=“GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub”>http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/</a>
OOS students can only use 4 year long or 8 semesters of AP classes (not honors) for the extra 8 honors points in the calculation. Also any UC will be around $55K/year with little or no financial aid available for OOS.

For Cali:
Reaches- UCLA, UC Berkeley, USC
Matches- Pepperdine?, some of the other UC’s
Safeties- Don’t know

For Texas:
Reaches- Rice
Matches- UT Austin, Baylor
Safeties- Don’t know
