Help me find the perfect pillow for finicky husband!

I swear my husbands pillow is as old as our youngest child, and that young man is a college graduate! I have tried to replace his pillow several times, but nothing suits except his old one. What I’m looking for is a down pillow that flattens out quite a bit. My husband sleeps sometimes on this side but mostly on his back. I am considering this one from Costco: http://www.costco.com/Pacific-Coast%2c-Medium-Support%2c-White-Goose-Down-Luxury-Pillow.product.100012636.html because I understand that back sleepers are supposed to have medium support, but do you think this will be too stuffed? Any other suggestions? As usual, I would like the best quality at the lowest price. Down alternative is not going to work - I probably have ten of them here and none of them passed muster.

Since it’s Costco, I’d go ahead and buy it and then return it if he doesn’t like it. Our family has had these pillows for about 20 years and loved them. We are back and side sleepers and don’t like them too fluffy–we all found them great. Our kids have them at their respective places too.

Have you simply replaced it and not said a word?
H could also put his old one on top of a new one for awhile.
I love that Costco pillow. However you might look on BBB or Amazon for one that is considered soft support.
I love a super soft pillow on top of a medium one.
And hope his pillow is being washed from time to time.

I don’t have one myself but a couple of my friends love their My Pillow. They have a website. I think you answer a few questions and they pick the right pillow model for you. I think about getting one but just haven’t yet.

I was recently talking to someone who can’t be without her pillow – she travels with it. Instead of replacing it, she just has a new cover put on it. She has had it for years and no other pillow will suffice!

OP, I think you have stolen my husband!!! If you find a pillow that he likes, please let me know, as I’ve been trying to replace his equally ancient pillow at our house. lol

This is too funny-I have about 10 mostly flat pillows that MY H bought trying to find the perfect pillow but finding them too easy to crush. HE wants the opposite of yours, firm-ish, but not hard OP! Since you want soft, I’d try the Costco ones, as others are suggesting. The worst that can happen is that you return them.

I think H’s problem is that he likes to lay on a stack of pillows like a wedge to watch TV for sports games or movies. He gets his entire upper body on them and they flatten out, then he doesn’t find them comfortable to sleep on. I’m going to get him an actual wedge and maybe a medium pillow and see if that helps. If anyone has a better idea, please make a suggestion!

Can you take him to the store, and he can try some out before buying? I am not sure why you have all the responsibility for picking them. I mean, I get that you might care more about the scruffiness of the original pillow than he does. But even if you do care more, you should ask him to go with you to look for new ones. Then when he gets his choice home, if it really does work, go buy another and keep it in the closet for future use so you don’t have to pillow shop again any time soon.

Haha, just went pillow shopping last weekend.

I showed my H his pillow and how yellow and flat it was. Men’ s sweat is yellow. His pillow was awful. I always had a cover on it and replaced the covers regularly. But he realized we needed new.

Buying pillows is almost as difficult as buying mattresses these days. Ugh. Foam, down, down alternative, side, back or stomach sleeper, firm, medium or soft, etc. Yikes H an I decided on a Clarion firm hypo-allergenic pillow. $40 bucks each. But we have been sleeping on them for a whole 4 nights and they are a big improvement.

Now if I can only get H to agree on a mattress. Went mattress shopping last weekend and it was awful. Hard decisions, hard sales, indecisive H. Don’t want to do it again soon. But need to!

And women’s isn’t? I just think we mostly won’t let our pillows get to that state…

I’ve had these Pacific pillows for many years. I like them.

Cuddledown, but they are expensive. You can call and chat with a pillow specialist in Maine. As much as I try to save on everyday expenses, I fell for a print ad 30+ years ago that read: ‘After all; it’s a third of your life’.

I like a down/feather mix and use two pillows–slightly firmer on the bottom and more down on top.

Is it sweat or drool?

Adding on to post#11, I do use a zip pillow cover as I find it keeps the down inside and I can take it off to wash occasionally.

Inparent–Apparently my expetience is different than yours. My mom always complained abrout my Dad turning bedding yellow. My H’s compared to mine, same age and washing, was like yellow and day. H and my Dad are not related. So it is not a biological thing.

S turns pillowcases yellow versus D’s. it just seems to be a thing with men.

Anyone else notice?

^^ yes

The Company Store (online and catalog) has a good selection of down pillows with different fill and firmness levels. We’ve been buying their products for years. Cuddledown is also good.

Sorry to have company in my misery! H has turned evey set of white sheets yellow despite showering daily. His pillow is the same one he took to college nearly forty years ago. Yuck!

Google results show many people with the same situation/question - male bedmate’s pillow turns yellow while female’s does not. I have noticed the same thing and assumed it was drool and not sweat.
