Help Me Finish My Holiday Shopping - 2 women in their 80s

Really good olive oil gift set

This oilive farm is local for me and it’s amazing!

How about old fashion maple sugar candy and syrup? I love maple candy but rarely find it locally and when I do ift’s not fresh. This is the best I’ve found so far (ordered for the last two years for my family)

Are these women relatives? The very best gift we’ve given my Mom was a Nanagram subscription. This is a service that takes the digital photos that you text to them (12 a month), prints them out and sends them monthly. We get a reminder a week before the print date. My kids, my husband and a couple of friends are all on the list of people that send the photos. https://nanagram.co/?referanana=pBfe4G We give her small photo albums for her to put them in, but now that I think about it, I should get a larger one to make an annual photo album.

@walkinghome that looks like it’ll make my mother so happy, thank you for posting!

Were we separated at birth? I thought I was the only one who didn’t like massages. I don’t like Yoga either

Have you seen Harney’s products in person? They are located in my town, and I can tell you they do the most fantastic job with their presentation of pretty much any product I’ve ever seen.

@cinnamon1212 Great to hear the positive feedback! I’ve tried some their tins of tea but have never had more than that. I don’t usually splurge on gift wrap for my orders but the packaging looked a cut above so decided to go for it knowing that these women are the type who would appreciate it.

@doschicos I hope they like Harney teas.

We love their teas…for anyone in the Millerton NY area, they have a fabulous tasting room and shop, and small cafe. Very very well worth the visit.

We have never been disappointed by anything we got from them.

I love the nanagram idea, though my mom doesn’t text. I can send it to my sister-in-law’s phone though!

My 82yo mother-in-law loves candles but was getting nervous about the dangers of the open flame. We got her a very nice battery-operated candle that truly looks real, complete with flickering flame. She loves it!

I got my daughter some Harney tea this summer. She was somewhere where she tasted Gyokuro Japanese tea that she liked, so I stopped at the Harney store in Soho in NYC to get her some (most tea companies don’t carry Gyokuro). It was too expensive ($65 for 4 oz), so I got her some of their Sencha tea instead (only $12 for the same size). She thought it was excellent.

Some possibilities:

  1. Dear Holmes. This service will mail weekly letters about a Victorian mystery, addressed to Sherlock Holmes. At the end of each mystery, Holmes sends a letter explaining the solution. A 3-month subscription is $49.99.

  2. History letters. I think there might be more than one site that does this, but Mental Floss is one. This also provides weekly letters, in this case actual letters of famous historical figures reproduced nicely. Also $49.99 for 3 months.

  3. Downton Abbey cookbook. For fans of the series. Recipes but also photos and food lore for the Downton Abbey crowd. Less than $50. About $35.

  4. A book by a recent winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, or by a favorite author

  5. Blueberry Breakfast by Stonewall Kitchens, if they cook. A nice change from chocolate.

  6. I got sequined slippers from Target for about $9, as a “stocking gift” for a few people. This could go with something else.

  7. A teapot and cup for one. Variable prices.

  8. Interesting item from MOMA. They have quite a variety of interesting things that are not too expensive.

  9. My brother once received 6 jars of pickles! There is a mustard museum in Wisconsin that has interesting items, if they might like something very offbeat.

I really enjoyed reading this thread. Still shopping. Mainly having trouble with gifts for men, though.

Great ideas, @MSUProf. Thanks for the list.

I’m a frequent gifter of Stonewall Kitchen stuff (and have sent them stuff from there in the past). Stonewall Kitchen offers some great deals leading up to Christmas if you get on their email list and time it right.

Ok, I’m a curmudgeon. I dislike massages and have let $100s of gift certificates go unused. Sometimes, they will sell me products in exchange. I don’t want more candles or chocolates or cookies. Those I give away. (Well unless something I really enjoy)

I need a new iron cover, but I doubt the few I mentioned it to will gift it. What I really want is for my son to add me to his Amazon Prime account, so I can binge watch Mrs Maizel. He did add me to his Netflix account. Honestly, I will be thrilled with his gift this year, a Shutterfly with pictures of their wedding. Nirvana.

Tomorrow is our office exchange. I will smile and nod. To not be too negative, I truly liked my gift last year !!!

I know the OP has already found her gift. I was going to suggest something that my 90+yo aunt loves–those remote controlled candles (already mentioned above). Safe, scent free, and realistic -looking. I even got a set for myself.

More ideas are good. There is always next year! Plus, they could benefit others.

I love See’s Chocolates so those would be great.

I think Wolferman’s English Muffins would appeal to older women. https://www.wolfermans.com/?ref=google_search_nontm&gclid=CjwKCAiAluLvBRASEiwAAbX3GV0n7Uj7aQzdXQZ8ucHvAMobAr7G8NlRt5rBOFcCuz2KaTya4HIonxoCYC4QAvD_BwE

Sorry, I should have read the whole thread. Ugh

my DH is out right now looking for a gift someone mentioned above - the edible bird feeder. thanks to whoever shared that idea!

and for the 88 yo FIL - I got him a tablet this year. hoping he likes it; he’ll be able to play sudoko puzzles, card games. word puzzles, and maybe text. I’ll have it all set up ready to go ahead of time. could be a hit - or miss! but he does play with his old windows computer… (has a flip phone for emergencies).

(PS: can you text from wifi on an android tablet to an iphone? anyone know?)

Re the bird feeder— is there any likelihood that squirrels ( what we refer to as tree rats) will enjoy this?

I’d say the likelihood is high.

@bgbg4us Unless you want your husband out of the house for awhile  , I’d look online where it is easy to source them.

Or bears. No bird feeders or seed of any kind in our area…it’s bear candy…and there are just way too many bears in backyards these days.
