Help me pick a school please (sociology + political science) [pre-law; WIlliams, Bowdoin, Vassar, Swarthmore, Georgetown]

Well…yes. It will cost more than Medicaid.

To add on to the thread, I’ve also been accepted to both Middlebury and Bates. I had eliminated those from my list because the others had more interesting programs for me, but are they schools I should reconsider?

Are they affordable?

yes, all basically the same financial aid package (thank god for 100% need met)

You can if you want to, of course, but I don’t think there is anything objective they add that you didn’t already have on your list.

And then subjectively: Middlebury of course is very rural–some people love the location in ski country and such, but I don’t get the sense that is what you are looking for.

Bates has a reputation for being maybe a little more eclectic/friendly than preppy/pre-professional . . . but this is relative to other NESCAC colleges. I personally would not be sure it was as much in that direction as, say, Vassar.

But again, I am not saying these would be bad colleges for you. I just don’t really see the need to add them to your list.

Well, without getting back into the “remote” discussion, Bates and Midd are great schools, but I thought you didn’t want too rural? Middlebury and Lewiston are charming, but rather… snowy  . Lewiston is the bigger of the two, but still…

Lewiston is really not remote – certainly no more than Williamstown, and roughly equivalent to Brunswick (maybe it takes 10 minutes longer to get to Portland).

Bates is wonderful (as is Middlebury), but I agree with others that the task right now is to trim the list, not expand it. Any of these schools can offer a tremendous experience for OP. But if a school was off the list, it might be simpler to keep it off, unless there’s some very good reason to put it back on.

I tweaked that post – but OP also mentioned other factors that may make them less desirable. OP has a lot of great options. Maybe I misread, but I got the impression the OP wanted access to a bigger city. I agree that there are no reasons at this point to add more to the list, unless they (the school/programs) bring some very compelling reason.

One of the great things in life is getting into a lot of colleges so that you have choice.

One of the challenges in life is choice - because you can only pick one.

That you were narrowed to four is great - but you still have to eliminate three.

You can, of course, reconsider, any you want.

But if you eliminated them for a reason and you are comfortable and confident in that reasoning, you might want to let them go - and focus on the finalists (of which you will eventually need to cut three).

If one is right - add them.

But then you make a complex problem even more complex.

In the end, the goal is to find the right one for you -so any decision to revisit should have that in mind - if you think one might end up the right one, then of course add.

But if you are confident in why you eliminated them, I’d personally leave them off!!

yeah, i’m just gonna leave them off the list! i only brought them up to see if there was any really special programs i was missing, but i think it’s best to keep to my 4 right now!

Sometimes what is very helpful if you are having trouble “ranking” is to take (compare) them 2 at a time. If you had to choose between Bates and Midd, which would you pick. Then take the “winner” and compare it to Gtown, take the winner and compare it to Williams, etc. That can be a way, when you are really struggling, to get them in more of a rank order. And if you can, go back again, before it gets too warm and springy. They all look fabulous then!

I would also add - there could very well be 4 “right” or 6 or however many “right” colleges…or certainly more than one.

So everyone tries to find that perfect one - but perfect (nothing is perfect so right) might be “many”. And that’s a good thing too!!

This isn’t a zero sum game. You can do well at multiple places.

It turns out after talking to him this was more or less what my S24 did to get his list down to only two (one LAC and one university, we are visiting both). For him, at least, this procedure worked, and quickly.

The LACs you have chosen have several things in common, but you have given compelling reasons to narrow down the list. There is an expression that you will grow wherever you are planted, and you sound like a pretty adaptable person who will do fine wherever you land. Its a nice problem to have!

The 4 choices you have are all great - I am a graduate of one, my brother another, my best friend from high school a 3rd and many friends the 4th (georgetown). My advice is you don’t need to pick georgetown for the law school placement - you can do that from any of the four. Each has its own “vibe”, but there will be people who move on to top 10 law schools from all four of these schools. I am a big proponent of the “compare two” idea that many commenters above have suggested to help narrow. but be comforted in the fact that these are all great choices and you won’t make a wrong decision. It will really come down to where you feel most comfortable (though I think you could be comfortable at any).

Four LACs plus Georgetown? Or have you eliminated a school?

the 4 plus georgetown!

If you mean at Vassar, see Degree Requirements & Courses of Study - Vassar College - Acalog ACMS™

For other colleges, see their web sites.

Here ya go! Looks like your 4 on your AP language will meet the criteria!

But it still lists SAT achievement which went away during COVID, so not sure how current that list is. ? @ucbalumnus did you pull that link from their website?
