I would text or email to confirm the date of next Tues., 9/8 as well. I try to avoid misunderstandings.
To stay married, spouse is always right. Again, I wouldn’t be the best authority on that either.
Bunsen, most of the time I just let it go but for whatever reason this became a thing…
We are just not communicating very well …and that’s an understatement.
Too funny, oldfort.
I would also think 8 days from now and English is my first language.
To me, saying “next” means “not the current” (as in week) AND “not the one coming up” (as in Monday or Tuesday). If you mean the UPCOMING Monday or Tuesday, there is no reason to say next; just say “see you Tuesday”.
So, in answer to your question: I would assume it to mean 8 days from now…(but would probably ask for clarification if I suspected or knew the writer to be less than concise…)
8 days from now, Monday and Tuesday.
So when will you tell us what the texter meant??? Don’t keep us in suspense too long!
I would think it meant 8 days from now too…but of course would confirm!
I’m not an expert on spousal communications.
But a great number of people consider the “weekend” as consisting of Saturday and Sunday and to mean literally the end of the week. So, even with Sunday being the first day of the week, many people colloquially use “next week” when they mean Monday, Tuesday, etc.
It used to be commonplace in my work life to get urgent messages on Sunday about things that had to occur “next week” when the sender meant “within the next few weekdays.” So, in that context, I assume that’s what people mean even if it’s not technically correct or, if it’s really important, I clarify by asking for the actual date.
So, on whose side did I fall?
I would interpret it as 8 days from now.
OMG my D and DH just had this exact same squabble at the dinner table. It didn’t go any better for them than it did for you!!
To me, next week means anytime during the week that begins tomorrow, Monday. So, next week, Monday or Tuesday, although odd sounding, would mean tomorrow or Tuesday.
If it was tomorrow or Tuesday it would be this week or coming week, Monday or Tuesday.
Next week would mean the following week.
I would assume the texter meant the coming Tuesday, but had not expressed it perfectly correctly.
Thank you all for taking the time to answer. I will wait until tomorrow to give you the low down.
I am surprised the answer goes both ways. I thought it would be a slam dunk.
It’s funny @movemetoo that your H andD had the same “discussion” and that it got a bit heated.
My relationship with my husband was nearly derailed over something like this. We met the weekend after Thanksgiving. I mentioned getting together and he says he’s busy but will call next month. It was a day or two until December. I figured it was a blow off and he’d think about it in January. He called a couple of days later, to him next month which was 2 days away was correct to say.
8 days from now
I can see it both ways, and would simply ask for clarification to avoid misunderstanding. Can’t see having a blow out argument over it. For comparison, DH was recently telling me about a situation that involved several men, but he kept using “he” without clearly differentiating who was who in his discussion. I couldn’t follow what he was saying without asking for clarification. I got frustrated because I had no clue which “he” he was referring to, and couldn’t follow what he was saying. He got frustrated because he had to explain further. But in the end it was easily rectified with clarification.
In the current situation, I’d think the person would say “tomorrow or the next day” if referring to the next 1-2 days, and/or say something like “a week from Tuesday” if talking about 8 days away.
It doesn’t matter what I think…it matters what the person sending the text means…and the context. Ask the person who sent the text to clarify. No other way to know.
8 days. fwiw, DH and I had this argument all the time as newlyweds, and finally defaulted to using a date. Now our sons refer to “next week” with a disclaimer of “Dad’s next week” or “mom’s next week” …
