Help me think of a homemade snack that can be eaten "whenever"

Breads – pumpkin, banana, etc.

PUPPY CHOW! (Chex rice cereal, peanut butter, chocolate chips and powdered sugar…delish!!)

They would probably enjoy a fruit platter, but I think that a plate of fruit set out for 5-6 hours would look pretty tired.

Are they willing to cut anything? A large hard salami with crackers.
Is the fruit going to be in the sun?
Crackers already spread with peanut butter or some with almond butter. My D used to have a friend whose Mom made peanut butter on graham crackers sandwiches.
Bagels with the cream cheese inside a small lunch box sized cooler.
I wouldn’t serve bananas to a mixed crowd of HS kids.

LOL, I take it that you’ve seen the Michelle Bachmann eating a corn dog photo.

Missypie:

You said the retreat is from 4-9pm. What are they doing for dinner and at what time? Do you really think they’ll be hungry for more food? Or are they not eating a dinner?

I guess I’m asking, are you providing snacks in place of dinner or in addition to? Are you looking for sweet/savory desserts? How many kids?

Missypie- haven’t seen the Michelle Bachman corndog video but I can imagine. I was informed a few years back that you can’t bring bananas for a snack unless it is all girls.
If they aren’t having dinner I would make sure to have some sort of protein. My girls get cranky if they don’t eat.

You can freeze yogarts and they will defrost enough so they become like a slushy.

hard-boiled eggs?

Grapes - fruit that doesn’t need to be cut or peeled.

Homemade oatmeal cookies/bars

If prior events are any indication, they will order a stack of cheese pizzas from the cheapest place and call it dinner.

In my experience with high school kids, they often will eat healthier foods, like part-skim mozzarella sticks and clementines, even if there is pizza. The kids I fed were quiz bowl competitors and theater participants; cast, crew and orchestra. Cookies disappear quickly too. I had time to make homemade, but any would do.

Doggychow…

And how the heck do you ost your own thread?? :(

If they will eat pizza first then I would send washed grapes and cherries and a sweet such as a bag of chocolate chips or a huge bag of M&M’s and a bag of skittles.

I’ve made the same recipe as leftrightleft (#13) using Oyster crackers…kids LOVE IT…

Side note pet peeve - when groups (especially group get togethers for kids) feel like they can just throw a bunch of pizzas on the table and everyone is happy - I’ve had my kids come home and say “ugh! I am SO sick of pizza!” - I know it’s cheap, but when that’s what everyone sets on the food table it gets OLD!!!

We like to bring a plastic bag of Joe’s O’s (the Trader Joe’s version of Cheerios) when we will need a snack.

If this is a group of girls and pizza is being served, then I would just add a few mostly healthier choices:

-a platter of carrot sticks and celery sticks (perhaps peanut butter too)
-a bowl of some type of chex mix, m&m’s, nuts(?), etc.
-a platter of apples & clementines
-a platter of homemade granola bars, cookies, brownies

Let us know what you decide!

Clementines get my vote as a yummy fruit that kids will peel. Chocolate covered mini pretzels are also simple and delicious and will be consumed in record time if you set them out!

If you slice tart apples (like the Granny Smith variety) into eighths and lay them cut side down on a platter, they will actually keep nicely and can be served with a caramel dip. I’ve done this for a healthy snack for school holiday parties and it was a big hit. When I included red apples (for a pretty red and green mix) or when I thought they would be sitting out for a while, I dipped them first in a lemon juice solution to avoid browning.
