help me twitter....er...tweet?

Well, when I noticed on our college’s webpage that you could sign up for twitters (tweets?) from the school, I signed up to follow them (and Stephen Colbert, while I was at it). It’s been kind of fun receiving the messages.

But I have a question about all of this. I’d rather ask my CC friends first than embarrass myself by goofing it up. Is the following correct?

Up in the box where it says What Are You Doing, if I write a note, it will go to anyone following me. But if I put someone’s name in front of the note first (e.g., “@StephenColbert I like your tie”), it will go only to him/her.

Is that correct? I tried to get my D to sign up and follow me so I could try it out, but only got one of those many rolled-eye responses that are so common in my household.

No- all your followers can still see the @StephenColbert tweet but he will understand that it is directed at him. You can send a private message on Twitter that will only go to that recipient.
I am enjoying twitter- recently started following Tom Crean, the Indiana basketball coach. Lance Armstrong is also a good one to follow. He is very prolific in his tweeting.
My son in law has a hilarious Twitter account set up on behalf of his Ragdoll cat which we have all enjoyed.

MomofWildChild is absolutely right that this is how it works right now.

But I believe I read just yesterday that Twitter is on the verge of changing that process, so that only people who are followers of both you and Colbert would receive that message? Did anybody else see this?

I love Twitter. MOWC, your son-in-law isn’t Sockington’s human, is he? I love Sockington madly.

I love Twitter too! I use it both personally and professionally - had my first tweet that helped someone out professionally this week!

If you want to only have the recipient see a tweet “direct message” them (DM) - you can do this by clicking on the list of people you are “following” and then clicking the link for “direct message”

I’m still learning! Does anyone have a link to a quickie easy to follow twitter tutorial? One thing I want to learn more about is tweetdeck.

abasket, I clicked on a person I’m following but didn’t see an option to DM. I did see a return arrow to the right of their name which says REPLY. If I click this, would the reply go only to him/her?

I follow PhilliesNation and last week they twittered about a great deal of Phillies tickets for the game on May 25th. Code: TWITTER Buy one ticket get second one free.

CHI…I’m not positive, since I’m new to twitter too but I think they also have to be following you too for you to be able to direct message.

Yes, either that or they just have to have their account set up to receive direct messages from people - i.e. I doubt Ryan Secrest (though fun to follow) would accept direct messages from the thousands of people following him!

OK, I took a chance and hit the REPLY to a tweet from my d’s college. My message now appears with the other tweets I’ve received. I therefore think the REPLY goes to everyone rather than the tweeter. Yikes, I feel so inept!

I just joined Twitter to follow my son, who is driving to the East coast (home) from college in AZ. Since he twitters from his phone, its been fun to track his progress across country and now we have an idea of when he’ll arrive.

Here’s a link to a decent “how to” - scroll down to #5 for info on direct messaging/replying etc.

archiemom, that’s the first use of twitter that made sense to me. I was on it but quit because I just felt I had nothing interesting to say. I was following the CEO of zappos.com though and his life was pretty interesting.

Okay I just looked at sockington. He doesn’t look like a ragdoll but his twitter is more interesting than mine :frowning:
MOWC what is name of said SIL’s cat?

abasket, thanks for that link. I tried out the direct message instructions, e.g., “d StephenColbert Who is on your show tonight?” However, a box came up & said that the person I addressed was not following me.

So I guess that does mean that I can’t send a direct message to one individual unless they are signed up to follow me. Dang, I have to find me a follower!

MOWC what a pretty kitty. No offense to Sockington (who is very funny) but I knew Sockington was not a ragdoll.

I feel like I just dropped in from the planet Mars. You guys are making no sense to me at all.

Ha Ha - anyone have the advertising at the top of this thread “buy 4000 tweets for $12.95”? So you can “buy” followers/friends now!!!

Yup I have that banner too. I guess you can. I also saw a job advertised recently for a twintern. It was for Pizza Hut. They were looking for an intern to post about Pizza Hut on twitter…
