Help me wean myself off Diet Coke

Burping seems to depend on the kind of pop.
The kind my H likes, Hansens ginger ale, makes me burp almost immediately.
However, I only drink it at home, & my loud burps are amusing to me. :o ( I also sneeze really loud)
Other kinds of pop doesnt cause such a problem.

emerald, I agree that some sodas make my burping worse. With most, I immediately burp after the first sip. I’ve tried drinking from a straw but that doesn’t make any difference.

ChocChipCookie–much of what’s in the book is also in this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/24/magazine/the-extraordinary-science-of-junk-food.html</a> although the stuff about the Coca-Cola Company is shortened.

Idad–I’m glad you clarified that; I was thinking the same thing. And especially how Dr. Oz mangles information and disseminates unfounded theories. Good article on him in the New Yorker recently:

[Michael Specter: Is Dr. Oz Doing More Harm Than Good? : The New Yorker](The Operator | The New Yorker)

I don’t necessarily think it’s any one thing like diet soda for instance that is bad for you - it is that every single processed food made is loaded with both sugar - usually in the form of HFCS, salt and a list of unpronounceable additives.

That’s why I would rather brew a pot of tea, add a tiny bit of sugar and make my own iced tea than buy store bought. Or make my own cookies or granola.

dmd and garland:

Thank you for the articles. I just printed them both and will have a chance to read them later tonight.

I really appreciate everyone’s feedback and discussion. So it seems as if I’m better off ditching ALL carbonated beverages if I don’t want to feel bloated or have cravings from the artificial sweetner.

I do like hot tea, so maybe I can try to make my own, like emilybee and others have suggested and put it over ice and see what happens. Definitely less expensive than buying cases of diet coke!

We have only about 2 packs of diet coke left in the garage, so I’m mentally preparing myself to not buy anymore after this runs out. I will earnestly give it a try and see if I can give it up altogether. It would help me a lot if I could tolerate the taste of iced tea. And plain ice water. I also like the idea of adding a bit of juice to sparkling water, etc. so I guess I’ll be experimenting for the next few months!

Not looking forward to giving up my one can a day, but hey…I really want to try doing without, and just replace it with better choices! I think it’ll be better for me in the long run. :)

Iced tea might not be the best thing to drink, as far as kidney stones go:

[Iced Tea May Cause Kidney Stones](Iced Tea May Cause Kidney Stones)

^^Great, dadinator! :(

Looks like boring ole ice water is the way to go :frowning:
Oxylate is what caused my first kidney stone coupled with being a bit dehydrated…yeah, I better get used to the taste of plain ole water! Maybe other choices in moderation…

High corn fructose syrup and aspartame. BAD AND WORSE. Research these two terms and you’ll never look at food the same way.

I drink tons of iced tea and luckily never had a kidney stone. After reading the article, I will make a point of using more fresh lemon in it. I guess there is warning to everything these days. Luckily I never eat rhubarb ;). I am willing to reduce my intake of meat, salt and spinach! Moderation is important but some foods just have to be your go-to comfort food at least until you are ready for the next step or warning.

Fooducate just posted 10 reasons to stop drinking soda for some more motivation.

Warning the video is pretty hard to take.

I am embarrassed to say how many coke zeros I drink per day, but I’ll say that you are doing a good thing trying to wean off the diet coke. Haven’t read rest of thread but try:
1 water in pitcher with 2 slices of lemon stored in the fridge
2 same thing but with a few cucumber slices instead
3 tropical ice tea with passion fruit, make a pitcher, no sugar needed
4 flavored seltzer water such as crystal geyser or Perrier
5 green tea - Lipton - cold in containers , I think u can get at Costco
6 coconut water such as vitacoco. Good prices at costco

OMG Moreover!

That video is HORRIBLE. Thank you for sharing. It defintely confirms what I need to do for myself and also for our environment. I’m so ready to make this change!

^^Yohoyoho:

Thanks for your suggestions too! I’m printing out this whole thread and going shopping! I’m starting just with cold water and then adding stuff as needed.

The thought of losing those 10 pounds I “found” is very exciting!! Lots of fringe benefits from going off this product. Yay.

One of the things I do in the summer is use my Keurig to make tea. Now, it is utterly ridiculous not to just use a tea kettle, but I find I make more tea when I just put a tea bag in a cup and operate the Keurig to just have heated water. I put a bunch of ice in a large Tervis tumbler, pour the tea over the ice add lemon or a little agave. I buy herbal tea and green tea.

(Full disclosure - still doesn’t taste as good as a small coke!).

YoHoHo - you could be my daughter. I am so worried about her coke zero consumption. She is under an enormous amount of stress, so I don’t want to nag and add something else to her load. She will have the first (relatively) stress free summer in a very long time this year and I am going to have a serious talk with her about getting healthy before she embarks on a new phase in her life.

I have had a very bad Coke habit - the real stuff, not diet. I’ve never been able to tolerate artificial sweeteners. I am down to one 7.5 oz can every morning. I’ve substituted iced tea, and fortunately I can’t stand any sugar in hot or iced tea. I also drink a lot of bubbly water, calorie-free, sugar-free, sodium-free. I like to put the bottles in the freezer until they are half frozen, and drink the slush.

I have heard that carbonation isn’t great for you. I also drink plain water. We have a super undercounter filter in the kitchen, and the filtered water is wonderful.

Carbonation isn’t good for you? What have you heard?

I’ve heard this (below…) and can only wonder at the joy of living in Brooklyn and getting seltzer delivered to my door.

In what way? My primary drink since my teenage years has been club soda, occasionally with a dash of lemon and salt. I do about a liter a day and have been forever.

When I saw the pay inside sign at the gas pump, I should have got back in my car and kept on driving. But no, I went inside to pay and there was my dark master waiting for me at the soda fountain. Diet Coke, Coke zero, Pepsi max, all on sale for .79cents. I was so weak. Damn you dark master!

I just went to breakfast the other day with friends and one of them had three diet cokes…with breakfast! It reminded me of this thread and made me wonder how those of you who are trying to quit are doing? Have you had success? I’m rooting for you!

^^Awww…yalemom:

That’s so nice of you! I haven’t had a diet coke since the thread began and I can honestly say…I really don’t miss it! I thought it would be so difficult and it hasn’t been, thank goodness.

I am drinking other things…protein shakes, Fuze, water, zero calorie beverages, some carbonated, some not…

I’m totally fine without it! I really looked forward to my daily diet coke and now I still go for something at that 3pm hour, but just choose something else and it’s okay!!

Thanks for asking. Yucch, the thought of having diet coke for breakfast just creeps me out. I know people have it that early all the time, I just never could drink diet coke before noon time.
