Im a greek girl just finished freshman year and im thinking of applying to some top colleges in senior year, so im trying to create something so that i can both help people and add it to my resume. I already have some ecs including many years of dancing, math club, math competitions (my major is probably math) and student and class counsil, but i want to create something new, to show initiative and leadership skills, which i unfortunately dont have much chances in my country to show otherwise. Anyway i have had some ideas about things i could do during sophomore and maybe junior year. Im thinking about either starting an online course for people who want to learn greek for free (im a native speaker and speak excellent greek i just havent taught anyone yet), or do some volunteerism. With volunteerism i mean either create and advertise 2-3 big events like beach cleaning by myself, or just volunteer in a library which will offer me much more service hours but not show leadership or initiative. I cant do all three of them so i need to choose one. Maybe i will be able to do two but tha depends on how things will go. What do you think i should start with and what will help me most with the college application progress?
Sorry for the spam, I just really need some help here, please! Any response is welcome!
Choose the one that you want to do the most. I would stay away from the greek learning thing, as duolingo has already done that. Your other two are kinda forced in a way, where they sound like application boosters, rather than things that display passion. Here’s my recommendation.
Teach Dance. You say you’ve done it for years, so perhaps you’ve reached a level where you are good enough to teach it. I think that you would genuinely love to do this, and, as a result, you would enjoy it enough to hold to it through high school.
Its true that ive taken it for years and ive reached a pretty good level, but not good enough to teach. Furthermore, to teach I need be over a certain age which im not, and go to a special school for extremely talented dancers which is very demanding and I will probably have to give up on school to follow that way. I would love to be able to teach, but right now what I want to focus on is academics and I cant teach ballet if I dont graduate the prementioned school. Plus I wont be able to do this in less than three years so unfortunately I cant do this.
