help me with the SAT

yep^ I do that alam. Length is not an issue, and i incorporate a few SAT words here and there into the essay.

It;s just the MC. I feel like I could write an 10-12 essay (10 for sure) on test day. I need to get my MC errors from 5-6 to 1-2. How can I do this in a week?

ok, i got a 80/80 and 10 essay on writing.

in my opinion, the writing part is BY FAR the easiest section to prepare for. You do not need any deep literary background or anything to get a perfect 800.

All you need to do is make sure you know the grammar. Get some prep books. in most of the books, they list the common areas of grammar that u’ll be tested on (dangling modifiers, subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antacedent agreement). after that, compile a comprehensive list of ALL the areas of grammar from ALL the books (more books the better). of course most of the concepts will be the same across all ur books.

ok, now, get ur hands on a reliable grammar manual. (i got the one by AZAR) it needs to be good. this is important. cheap, thin grammar manuals try to make the concepts simple but u lose the true underpinnings behind the concepts if u go with those.

read the sections in the grammar book corresponding with the areas of grammar on ur compiled list. make notes. Recite the grammar rules over after u make notes.

after u can recite the full set of rules from ANY area of grammar being tested, go do practice tests. do around 20 sets and u should be fine.

when ur doing tests initially, try to match each question with the area of grammar that it tests on (this should be obvious for most questions). after like 10 tests, u will unconsciously match EVERY error with an area of grammar u learned. i still pick at grammar mistakes in every piece of text i read today be it something my teacher wrote, a bio textbook, etc. ■■■■■…:D

anyways, this is a guide to how to get an 800. if u spend 4 hours a night on this for a week, there is ABSOLUTELY no reason y u cant get 800.

good luck:D

one more thing, dont be so sure about ur essay. that part is subjective. putting ur chips on something thats PURELY subjective is dangerous in my opinion…

^kelloggs, that seems like a ton of work to me.(writing down all the rules and getting a grammar book and knowing the rules inside and out). Do you think there is a more efficient way to get to 800 in W?

I now seem to be better on the ID q’s than on the Sentence correction q’s, when it used to be the other way around.

And yea, the essay is very subjective, but I’m hoping for a 10. I want to be able to nail the MC part of it though.

Also, a question on score choice: how do you use it? I signed up for the SAT, so now do I automatically have the option of score choice? can someone fill me in on this?

viggy i’m so worried = =
i just started studying for the sat again like yesterday, when i realized i had less than 3 weeks left T0T
and i haven’t started studying for bio yet
= =
am i going to be banned from CC by mentioning study habits like these…? xD

im soooooo dead…Orz

the bb’s last 7 tests are annoying with no curve
i did one yesterday, and my range is supposedly like 1930~2240

 • -

oh and how are you supposed to solve the sequence problems?
ones like: the 1st # is 1, then a 0, then a 1 followed by 2 0s, then another 1 followed by 3 0s…etc. what is the xth 3 in the sequence?

^yea, really annoying. i had a curve like that too. i just took the average, which is what i was told to do. but, its like a 300 pt. curve which is huge!

ok, viggy

what i’ve outlined is a SYSTEMATIC approach to absolutely nailing the mc portion. in other words, if u stick to it, i can almost guarantee u get 80/80 on mc.

if u want to spend ur 3 weeks looking for other more efficient ways to get 800, u go right ahead. there are probably other more efficient “shortcut” ways. but keep in mind, if those methods fail u…u’ll be stuck with a 700ish writing score. ur pick

ok kelloggs, I think I will use your strategy. I just want to clear some things up. So, I will compile that list of everything tested during this week for sure. I will go to the library and get a good grammar book. You said you got one by AZAR? Is that the company or author or something else? Is the book easy to understand (I don’t know a lot of grammatical terminology, so I don’t want to be drowned in it). I can ask the library here if they have such a book. OR are there any other grammar books you suggest?

I actually have a copy of GRAMMATIX (it says "Grammatix: The complete PSAT and SAT strategy guide). This book gives a super detailed review of all the concepts and higher end concepts. silverturtle…the CC W guru lol, says its very good. So, I have this, Barron’s and CB book to compile my list.

Then, when I take notes, how detailed do they need to be? I am confused as to how thorough and comprehensive my notes must be. Could you give me an example or clarify this? I mean, should they be 1 pg. per topic? Half a page? I quarter of a page? I just want to clarify.

Hopefully this will get me that 800 I’m looking for!

good luck viggy! It would be nice if someone who knows the SAT inside out could help this totally stressed out viggy

Viggy, if I didn’t nkow you better from so many prior posts, I would absolutely think you are a ■■■■■ at this point. So lets see, you can’t get the score you need on the SAT…which actually is supposed to reflect your real abilities, prior years of education, and probably how much of your life you have made time for reading…not something that can be simply crammed and gamed…and now you want to balk at someone who has suggested a great solution for a week of cramming, and you find it too much work? WT??

^I make about 3-4 errors in W at this point. I mean, I was just saying that if maybe kelloggs knew of another way to cut down to 2-1 errors, because once I make 3 errors…then I get -4 in W, and that kills my score.

Kelloggs said himself that W is by far the easiest section to prep for…so I would like to get to 1-2 errors in the next week from my 3-4 errors at the moment.

I think I see what you are saying. But help me understand better. So there are particular schools in mind (or in general if you must), that you feel will accept you if you don’t make these 3 errors, but will reject you if you do?

^what I mean is…3 errors in W = -4 = 710 or so with a 10 essay. And chances are I won’t get 800 in M and CR, so pretty much if I don’t get 1-2 wrong in W then i won’t get a 750+ W score.

So, yea, at the end of the day, I need 2250+ to be competitive and a 700 in W would kill my score. And seeing all the awesome applicants getting rejected this year with 2200+ scores makes it even more imperative to score 2250+.

ok, just wrote another QAS test.

I got:
690 CR
720 M (2 wrong, 2 Omit in grid in!..ran out of time)
W - scaled 72…so from 700-750 or so.
TOTAL: 2110-2160.

This is terrible! Do I have any hope for getting to low 2200s in a week? Math was quite awful, I usually get 750-760 (couple errors). CR, i got perfect on the sentence completion!..but the passage part…I made 8 errors and had 1 omit…terrible (-11 overall).

So pretty much, I need some last minute help to tune up to get low 2200s. i think i have a good shot of getting 700 CR, 750 M, 750 W on a good day, but I need to try to get really close to 800 W and 800 M. Kelloggs or anyone, how do I improve those 2 parts???

Kelloggs, I want to try your method for W, but I doubt I have enough time! So, what else worked for you? Actually, on this test, I made 2 errors in the paragraph correction portion…I am terrible on that part. I made 1 error on a sentence error ID q., and 1 on a sentence completion. So, any help with the passage correction is appreciated. I usually don’t have much time (5 min.) when i get to passage correction.

SO, what are some tips and pointers to improve there. I woulda had a 79 scaled score if I had -2 (it was a tough W section). SO, I was so close to high 700s, until i messed up on the paragraph correction part.

Also, for M, i am suddenly runnig out of time. it used to be the opposite. i used to have too much time left over. now, i go slowly and make sure of no silly errors, but in the mean time, i run out of time for the tougher q;s. what are some tips and pointers here.

I know CR, mmy goal is 700…no way to improve to super high in a week for that section. But, M and W, there is a little sliver of hope to get to high 700s in each. So, i want to capitalize on that.

Help me out fellow Canadians! (and don’t hide anything from me on the basis that ‘i might get in over you’ because all my ECs include is just baseball. if i get into a top school, most likely it’ll be for baseball…but i am praying for a miracle that i can get in the regular way, or have good scores for BS-MD programs at schools which you all are probably not applying to anyways)

personally, if i were u, i would just hope to get recruited for baseball at this point especially if u really want hyps…

^but I want to try to get into BS-MD programs as well, and for those baseball doesn’t even count…even if your recruited. And also kelloggss, I still can write the SAT in October if I really do poorly…but I would like to get to low 2200s so there isn’t so much pressure the next time I retake. Also, low 2200s can mean that for a a little while I can try out the ACT for a bit and see how well I can do/how much I think I can improve. (700 CR, 760 W, 770 M or some combination of W and M that equal over 1500…and shoot for 700 CR).

Also, I am not dying to get into HYPS. If I got into Cornell or ‘lower Ivys’ I’d be thrilled…i put that mention about baseball in there because I’m not a threat or anything to other Canadians, unless Ivys really want baseball players…in other words, i already have less of a chance of getting in than those with awesome ECs

I should mention that the test I wrote was the second complete test that I wrote that day, so fatigue may have been a little factor.

But seriously though…4 errors in W kill me, because of the deduction. Like I said, -2 would’ve been 79 scaled…so with a 10 essay, with that test, it would’ve been 790…raising my total to 2200. That is my goal for this first SAT…low 2200s.

So, I’m pretty close to that goal, but I need that extra jump in W and M.

So, for M now, i seem to be doing the opposite of what i used to do…i am going too slow now and seem to not be able to speed up. with more time, i think -1 was easily doable on that test I wrote…because i missed 2 due to lack of time, another was a dumb mistake due to rushing near the end of a section.

So, anyone, tips for M and W to get that boost. -1 in M is my goal, and -2 in W is my goal because that deduction for -3 (to -4) hurts my score a lot.

kelloggs, not helpful advice.

so, yea…i just wanna get into 2200s on this SAT. So, I need about 100 pt. boost (to be on the safe side). it’s fair to say that Direct hits 1 and direct hits 2 + princeton review hit parade will get me 18/19 or 19/19 on Sentence completion…so, i need to get a little bit better at the passage q’s to get my 700ish in CR.

So, I would need 1530 more points to reach my goal. What can I do in a week’s time to get 3 errors in M down to 0? Should I just write a bunch of practice tests? How can I learn to get 0 errors? I review all my answers and everything…but sometimes i goof up and made 3 errors, other times i get -2 and get 750. i thinkk if i can make 1 or 0 errors in M, then i’ll be all set to reach my 2200 goal for this SAT.

Also, writing. I review everything and understand all solutions. BUT, I will still make 3-4 errors and the deductions hurt a lot. What can I do in 1 week to get to 2 errors again? I will try kelloggs approach for the October SAT and that way, I should guarantee myself at least 780 W, but for now, -2 and 10 essay in my goal (760ish score I think).

What do you think? I have a lot of things on my plate right now academically, athletically, and more…so I need some great advice on how to tweek W and M, to get to 2200. All help appreciated and I know it seems like I am repeating myself, but I am brutally honest in that I need a little expert advice.

Fine tuning is what I need in W and M. (i have 10 princeton review practice tests…should I just write them all before the SAT? Would that be the best prep? or is there some better method to focus in on W and M to perfect them?).

I realize a awesome score of 2250+ in unlikely right now, but low 2200s (like 2210) could be possible. I just want to achieve this the first time through, so that at least I know that I can do a little ACT work on the side to see how I fare in that…then come back to the SAT. The second time through, I want to get 2250+.

Thank you and I have like 11 days to prep! If you guys can help me get to 2200, I will literally publish a book called “how to cram for the SAT: a guide to gain 100 points in one week” lol.

ok…sorry to bump my thread again…but I have signed up for the June SAT so, once again, i’m left with 1 month to prep.

I am looking for some advice for the Critical reading portion of the SAT. It really gives me fits. I sometimes nail sentence completion (get 18/19 or something), while other times I do really poorly (15/19 or so).

I plan on reading PR Hit Parade and review DH Vol. 1 and Vol.2 and find some other common/good books to study vocab. from so, I hope I will be all set for this part.

BUT…the actual passages! I honestly have no clue how to improve. I am a very slow reader, so the strategies of going paragraph—>answer q’s_----> next paragraph—>answer q’s does not work for me as I run out of time.

I have tried marking up the line ref. q’s and skimming…then slowing down when I get to a line reference part…answer the q…and continue, but I still go a little slow.

Now, is there a method that really works and is very efficient that you would suggest for me (i heard about one where you just read the q’s and go to the reference, answer, and continue in that fashion).

Also, how do you improve CR scores? More practice? Are there any drills or anything I can do?
