I come from a very traditional Indian family hell bent on protecting me from the world, due to this fear I have to stay in town go to a CC and then go to the local Cal State, or go to the Cal State for 4 years-achieve my BSN and then get my ass married off and then I am done. In high school I didn’t try as hard and my stupidity lead me to not even attempt to get to any UCs and they rub this in my face constantly. Also they are well aware of the TAG program the UCs are offering and already said we will not pay the second you leave this house. My question if my grades are pretty solid- in the 3.7 and up range, can I get a higher chance of finacial aid, or explain them of my problem. I want to become a anathesist, they won’t let me or get me married off in the process, in terms of if he wants to provide for me to pay. My family is pretty wealthy and can afford it but are stuck in this old time mentality and have every second of my life planned. And this aid, or full ride is my only way out of this.
If your parents are “pretty wealthy” you will not receive any financial aid. What you need is merit aid which would require good grades and test scores. Also Cal States and UC’s do not give generous merit aid so I would look to the private schools nearby. There are merit scholarship links at the top of the Financial aid thread but most would be out of state. I suggest you do some research first and ask your parents how much they are willing to pay. Good luck
You might take the BSN and then get out of the house and you can work and make plans of your own. It isn’t unheard of for nurses to go to med school. But if you knew this situation well and didn’t position your academics well you are stuck with no means for college. If you are not a terrific worker chances for med school are not good anyway, you likely would know by now. You have to have worthy grades plus SAT for full rides. Your parents income is used until you are 24 or married or join the military. There is no explaining that they won’t pay, colleges will not care, that is a family choice not to pay for your college. They only help if you come from low income without means. If you find some full ride college in a remote location how will you pay to get there and where will you go winter break and summer break? There are some of these colleges in the links mentioned. Or you can google for ‘work colleges’ but I think you may have to be low income.
But 3.7 can get you into some of the UC, sure with a good SAT score. Did you calculate your UC weighted gpa? Why don’t they want you to TAG to UC? Perhaps they will change their mind because you won’t be so young and maybe they will think you are mature enough to go when you are 20.
