I’m feeling frustrated. I was involved in a pedestrian accident in mid-November that required several surgeries. My daughter is a senior looking to study voice in college. She was a primary caretaker which made it difficult for her to keep up with her December 1 application deadlines. I’m feeling extremely guilty. With my broken ankle, I drove from Texas to Miami for her meet with a professor for a trial lesson, only to find out the next day that her application has been withdrawn from the frost school of music and she was being considered for her second choice major (non-music), due to the deadline. She submitted the common app on December 1, however, it didn’t process until the 2nd (that’s what I was told by admissions). They a really gave me conflicting information (the first time I called, they said it was the common app deadline, then they said it was the frost school of music deadline). I’m not sure what to do at this point. The school is saying they don’t have access to her prescreen uploads either. After the trial lesson, the professor said “I would love to have you in my studio” and she really enjoyed working with him. The professor she had the trial lesson with suggested that she reached out to the program director to explain the situation, so that he can look into it (which she has); however, we haven’t heard back yet. This was over a week and a half ago. We also sent an email to her admissions counselor. I’m really at a loss. She’s devastated and I’m devastated for her. I feel like it’s my fault, and I’m not sure how to help her.
You can’t wind the clock backwards.
Does she have other pending applications as well? If so, perhaps concentrate on those until you get an answer from UMiami.
The only other thing I can think of is to have her high school counselor put in a call to admissions. I hope the program director is able to rectify the situation.
But, I would proceed forward with her other applications as if things won’t work out at Frost for Fall 2025. If she really wants Frost she could take a gap year and apply for Fall 2026. She could also check to see if Frost takes Spring applicants. A few months or even a year in the grand scheme of things is nothing (although I know it’s stressful right now for both of you.) Good luck.
She does. She got an audition invite at CCM (University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music). We were really hoping for Frost, The first reason being because we love the teacher she had her lesson with, and the second reason being that our family lives in South Florida and we wanted to move closer to my parents (they’re elderly). I’m incredibly proud of her for passing that prescreen, but I am also concerned for her to be so far away (for several reasons). She followed up with the professor, and subsequently the music program director emailed her back today and said he would forward the message to admissions. He said he has no control over the situation, and would forward the message to frost admissions to connect with her. I’m not sure what that means. Originally, the professor we met with sounded confident that the director would be able to handle it, but it doesn’t appear that way in his email. She went ahead and sent music admissions an email proactively, and in that email she explained the situation with my accident. I’m really hoping we hear positive news. I’m not sure what to expect.
