Help my friend

hello , i figure you parents would have some good ideas

my friend rarely tries in school , gpa is prob at best 3.0 , considers "c"s good
takes no honor and no aps and think he could get in uga
i need some ideas to help him realize he needs to step it up , or help him grasp reality , please i really wanna help him

He has to figure this out for himself.

The average GPA for students admitted to UGA through Early Action was a 4.11 this year. Don’t know what their regular decision stats are likely to be, but unless your friend is an exceptional football player, he is unlikely to get in with a 3.0 GPA. He needs to be looking at other schools.

Have him look at the range of stats for entering freshmen for the colleges of his choice.
The middle 50% of entering freshmen had GPAs of 3,81-4.06 at UGA
He needs A’s or some honors and APs to raise the GPA
Middle 50% SAT scores 1810-2060

Nothing wrong with community college. And if your friend is not academically inclined or motivated there are some career-oriented two year degrees and also certificate programs at community colleges that might appeal to him. Or he could work after high school until motivation finds him. It happens late for some.

or point him to the Supermatch tool here on CC (Look over on the left) and have him put in his stats, etc and see what comes out.

I understand that you want him to go to college.

But what does he want? Does he have any idea of the path he wants to take after high school? Is college part of his plan, or does he need help formulating a plan of his own?

Hi,
Have you shown him UGA’s average admitted freshmen class statistics (average GPA, test scores, etc.)? If he sees that he is not a strong applicant to UGA, he might work harder to improve his grades in time for other college apps. Even then, it seems as if he really wants to attend UGA, so if he doesn’t come to his senses, you should let him apply anyway and let him at least try to get in. I mean, if he doesn’t apply, he will never know if he would be able to get in or not.

Good luck with your college apps and your friend’s!!!

You might wanna see if hems applying to KSU, UWG, GSU, etc. Cause a UGA acceptance seems unlikely. Lofty goals are ok as long as you know there’s a net to catch you when you fall (and your friend is likely to just do whatever they want anyway).

Invite him to go to a UGA tour and admissions meeting. Meet with an admissions counselor. They’ll tell him what he needs to be accepted.

My friend did this with her son when he was a sophomore or junior in high school. He wasn’t working up to his abilities, he was getting average grades in IB because he found it all boring. He knew what college he wanted to go to, and she took him there. Admissions officer told he he wouldn’t get in with those grades. Mother said nothing. Life changed for this kid and he did get in.

The motivation has to be intrinsic. You can’t make him do anything he doesn’t want to do.

For students like him, community college may be a more appropriate next step.
