Help my junior make a list: small class size, good STEM (CS/math/bio) and research opportunities, blue states, <$40K with need-based aid

No, just our oldest- our D26 is awaiting her decisions this semester, I realized I accidentally put D23 in my previous post- oops! But I do think it would be a great place for the OP to have her daughter check out, seems like it would be a great fit.

With respect to safeties, has your daughter taken the PSAT? The University of Maine offers free tuition and mandatory fees for NMSF. This award is for 30 credits per year, up to 4 years, with a maintained 3.3. GPA. If she applies by Dec 1, she will also be eligible to receive an additional $3,000-$5,000 merit ā€œEarly Action Award.ā€ UMaine is an R1 institution in a blue state. Several laws have been passed in Maine that support transgender individuals, including access to gender affirming care.

Their estimated cost for housing and food for next year is $14,664. I don’t know how many other possible fees exist beyond the mandatory, so that would be a question to ask. For example, there is a fee for the honor’s college of $200 per semester; is that considered to be a mandatory fee? (That fee is waived for Pell Grant eligible students). If she will need health insurance, that would be an extra $4,838 per year. They estimate $1K for books and supplies.

Over 700 students are currently enrolled in UMaine’s Honor’s College. UMaine’s Honor’s Living-Learning Community is available to the HC’s students, but isn’t mandatory. That housing is spread across floors in four dorms. There are 11 Themed Communities at UMaine, including Prism+, but they are not guaranteed. They can be contacted by email or phone with questions.

ā€œThe Prism+ community is comprised of first-year and upper-class students, and is designed to create a supportive environment for students who identify as or are allies to the LGBTQ community. Programming will focus on issues of gender identity and sexual orientation as students living in this community will be encouraged to explore their own identities in a safe, open, and welcoming living environment. This program will partner with the Rainbow Resource Center to provide exposure to a variety of educational and social opportunities centered around the diverse needs of the LGBTQ and ally populations.ā€ It’s located on floors 3 & 4 at Aroostook Hall.

Other perks of the Honor’s College include close working relationships with faculty members, a cohort of engaged peers, and opportunities for original research. UMaine has a 4+1 M.S. Program in Bioinformatics with Northeastern University. 12 credits taken at UMaine count toward both degrees, reducing total cost and time needed to complete the Master’s. She may also be interested in the CompuMAINE Lab. On their page they note that they are always looking for interns.

NMSF – I think so? She couldn’t take the PSAT because she went to the MIT fly-in, but sent in the ā€˜alternate entry’ request. They sent her back a form for her school to sign off on, which they did, so probably that will work? It seems like the score conversion they use makes her selection index pretty high, so she’d qualify. Nice to hear that there are some non-southern states that do NMSF scholarships as well, since I’d only heard of southern ones.

I think you have access to safeties in WUE alone. If needing a liberal state, E New Mexico has $6500 and has bioinformatics Oregon State is $19K and has.

Wash State offers an NMF. Do they have a major that could work? Actually, it’s NMSF. Free tuition.

Fordham used to - and may still without assuring it.

NJIT - a public, says e purpose of this scholarship is to cover tuition and fees minus other tuition based awards.. . It’s for NMF.
