After an interview and essay application, I got into the Next Generation Service Corps at ASU with a full tuition scholarship for BS in CS in addition to Barett Honors. I am excited about the leadership and community service mission of this program. I currently also got accepted into virginia tech (no scholarship ~50k for College of Eng), stony brook (~40k post scholarship for Comp. Eng) and Umass (~45k post scholarship for Comp. Eng), RPI (~45k post scholarship for Software Eng), RIT (~50k for CS post scholarship), CU Boulder (no scholarship so CE ~65k) as other choices. I would like to hear from folks on experiences about ASU Next Gen Service Corps + Barrett Honors for CS and also thoughts on my other acceptances and how I should evaluate my acceptances for a decision. I will be OOS from WA state. Thanks.
I looked up this program last night - what a wonderful program.
If you are excited by the mission, it’s fantastic!!! It has a unique component and the three internships (public, private, non profit) are an assured level of experience.
Whatever you decide, congrats to you but if service is up your alley, seems like it would be hard to beat.
But given the required classes, you might want to ensure they won’t extend your CS degrree timeline.
Good luck
The ASU Next Generation Service Corps (Next Generation Service Corps | Public Service Academy (asu.edu)) is a fairly new program, so you might not get much feedback on the program itself.
Barrett Honors (Barrett, The Honors College | Arizona State University (asu.edu)) however is well established. It’s considered one of the best Honors programs in the country. And the CS program at ASU is very good.
It certainly sounds like a great opportunity to me.
PS: my son graduated from ASU as a civil engineer last year on a full tuition scholarship. We are very happy he decided to go there versus more expensive options. Being debt free as one starts one’s career is very satisfying.
I think the choice is obvious. Go to ASU. You have a tuition scholarship in an honors program. That’s a tangible accomplishment you can put on a resume when you graduate, and would give you a huge competitive advantage over your peers applying for the same job. All the other schools would put you in a mountain of debt for the same bachelors degree.
Since you really like the program, and it is the least expensive of all of your options, it seems like the obvious choice.
However, check on whether the NGSC and the honors program would require additional course work that could require you to take overload schedules or an extra semester or summer sessions of school (which would still likely be cheaper than four years of increased costs of your other options). If you will be going in with AP credit that fulfills some requirements, that may be helpful.
My daughter will be an NGSC participant. She’s really looking forward to the opportunity provided. She enjoys giving back so this is a natural fit for her. While it’s a commitment, it’s one she’s ready to do. I’m not entirely sure how it would work to be both honors school& NGSC member, but plenty do both. Both require work outside core & major classes. NGSC has stated most of their students graduate in 4 years. Barrett is a partial scholarship, whereas NGSC is full tuition. It costs more to live in Barrett. NGSC might have 30 to 50, at the very most, freshman. Having that small community I see as a benefit to being at a large school. It’s a great opportunity for students who want to make a difference. Good luck in your decision!
