Help - New Yorkers

D will be moving from one apartment in Manhattan to another across town. Does anyone know of a reliable local moving service?

D and her roommate are also looking for a reliable handyman who will mount their TV, hang pictures and reassemble furniture if needed.

TIA

My D has done this twice, and both times called the guys from Craigslist. They’re fast and do this all the time. As for the handyman, can’t help there, but there are listings for guys who build lofts and the like, so maybe a call (e-mail) to one of them.

I have an out-of-the-box solution on the handyman. I have heard that, with Hurricane Sandy repairs all over the city, it is not a cinch to find someone professional.

If all you need is to assemble some furniture and hang pictures, try calling some of NYC’s independent theater companies. Find these by googling Off Off Broadway.

Ask if you can contact their set builder to offer a quick freelance per-diem handyman/carpentry job for your D. They have skills to do what you’ve listed, easily, and always need the money.

Paying3tuitions - great idea. I’ll pass the suggestion on to D.

“just”aMom – does your D remember the name of the movers she used?

TuTuTaxi: My daughter moved into her first apartment in NYC this past summer… a 5th floor walk up in a pre-war building on the upper east side. Needless to say we were wondering how on earth we could get her furniture etc. up all those stairs! I googled “affordable movers in NYC” and found a ton of resources. We ended up using “RobtheMover.” He has a great website and responded to my inquiry within an hour. We emailed back and forth several times to confirm date, time and price and he answered all questions promptly. We were a bit nervous as we did not have to give a deposit or anything but 2 guys showed up the day of the move and carried all of her stuff, including a full size bed, mattress and assorted furniture and boxes up to the apartment. We did not have to go from place to place as your daughter does, but they do offer that service and I think I even saw on the website that they also provide some types of handyman services. I believe we were charged $80 per hour for 2 guys and the minimum was 2 hours. My husband tipped them each and said it was the best $200 he ever spent!
We never saw “Rob” as he just sets up the appointments and negotiates the fees, but the guys were 10 minutes late that morning, and my husband called Rob, who confirmed they were ruuning a few minutes late. Daughter will probably be moving again this summer to a new building and we will be giving Rob a call! Hope this helps. Good luck!

We used FlatRate movers to move our office from one midtown location to another. They stuck to their estimate, had about 4-5 guys who packed up efficiently and moved us quickly.

I don’t, TutuTaxi, but their charge was ~$50 an hour for 2 guys. She had a loft bed from Ikea, and when they showed up they even disassembled it and reassembled it at the other end. I think she ended up paying about $150 total. The last time was from LES to Brooklyn, so that was a bit more. But they are fast and efficient.

Thanks All for your help. Much appreciated :)

tutu, for the handyman work, have them try taskrabbit.com.

My D just moved two weeks ago from the UWS near Lincoln Center further uptown to Hamilton Heights. The building she was living in has an elevator, but her new apartment is a 5th floor walkup. She looked at yelp for movers that were 4 star with lots of comments and ended up using Clean Cut Movers. D packed all of her boxes and the movers only had to take apart her bed which is lofted with storage units underneath.

The movers put her bed back together and they also installed the window air conditioners that were moved. D had livingroom funiture, TV, dresser, a couple of bookcases in addition to a small bar table and stools (and all her boxes). I think the movers cost us around $400 with the tip.

I don’t know what kind of building your D is moving into. If it’s a larger building, it may be union. If it is, there is NO way in h-e-double hockey sticks that she would be able to get her stuff into the building if her moving crew isn’t union as well.

Additionally, MANY buildings require that the moving company be insured and that you’ve insured the move. Often, proof of insurance is required a day or two before the move.

Finally, many buildings here limit the hours you can move in/move out. Mine, for example, does not permit any moves on Saturday, Sunday or holidays. Moves must start no later than 3 pm and you’re charged overtime for a building freight operator if it goes past 5 pm.

I know with walk-ups, etc., the rules are different because they aren’t unionized. But find out the rules before you start looking for movers.

We had great luck with Intense Movers last summer. Two young men unloaded our vehicle and hauled everything up the 3 flights to the apt. They had a 4 hour minimum and did not need it to unload, so the remainder of the time they assembled all furniture. They were obsessive about doing it right. They were both recent college grads, who were professional and eager to help. Best $ we could have spent.
Good luck and do check building rules and schedules.
