In State, rising senior, female, GPA 3.9+ unweighted, 4.5+ Weighted. 6 APs now + 5 APs in senior year. Already took SAT 3 times with superscore( R:650, M:790, W:700), no SAT2. Try to get a small scholarship at UMD College Park, should I take SAT one more time in October to get better SAT score and apply early action? Does the 4th time look bad? I do not think about ACT.

Well, alot really depends on other factors such as EC’s, but academic wise, no I would not take any more standardized tests; your scores are already good enough and you have a very good GPA with lots of AP classes. I know BK scholarship winners with slightly worse stats, so my point is, you have a very good chance at a good scholarship (again, I don’t really know about your EC’s).

Are you valedictorian? I thought those wee the only kids offered a BK scholarship. Anyway, I wouldn’t retake any tests if I were you, but definitely apply early to get the best FA package

Some leadership positions, 380+ hours community service, 2 varsity sports , NHS… I think I am low on SAT, so I cannot think about BK scholarship with 650 Reading. Something lower than BK will make me smile. I am working hard to get 700+ on Reading, but I heard 4th time SAT is not good. Bad thing, I am Asian female, do I need 2250+?

You’ll be just fine. Most schools will accept you and a lot of scholarships and grants will come your way.

I will apply only 2 public colleges in Maryland

UMD doesnt consider ECs for merit, so dont worry about it.

@bmonticello23, UMD DOES look into EC’s and essays, and recs for merit aid, however they heavily focus on GPA/SAT.

@JuniorHS, your CR+M is a 1440 and your total is 2140, both of which are very good scores, taking it a 4th time won’t hurt u, but u really don’t need to (unless your applying to ivies). You would be wasting your time and money taking it again. you have a good GPA and your EC’s seem pretty good. like sksbl88 said, lots of scholarships and grants will come your way.

3.9 GPA. The rest can be average and she’ll carry herself fine.

You have nice stats and a very good chance at getting some form of merit aid. Retaking the SAT is not necessary to receive aid, although a 700+ in reading will make receiving a BK interview more likely.

It is up to you to decide how you want to approach this. I know personally I would want a 1500+, but some may consider me a bit obsessive compulsive. :p

My opinion is going to make TerpGuy look very laid back.

Your stats are good for admission, no problem there.

As for scholarships, my understanding is they are awarded based on a matrix of SAT score and GPA. I would suggest that you work very hard to get that CR score up. Remember they superscore, I don’t think they would take points away for taking the test a fourth time.

The reason I would go to the trouble is because MD is quite stingy with merit money, and has become more competitive each year. I would guess that you might qualify for a $2-5k/ year scholarship, but you might not with that CR score. My D received a Presidential of $5K/year. UW GPA of 3.93 and weighted 5.25. 7 AP’s, mostly honors classes, good EC’s, a little light on leadership. SAT R+M 1550 (single sitting). That got her into the Honors College, but not considered for Banneker Key Scholarship. My guess is that’s because her total score was 2270.

From the analysis I did of the scholarship threads, those who posted here on CC generally had a 2300 or better for Banneker Key consideration. I don’t know if that’s skewed because the people posting here are on the high end of the scale.

To be considered for ANY merit you have to apply early action, so be sure you apply on time!

I think UMD weighs SAT scores pretty heavily for scholarships. My son had worse grades and the same or slightly better sat scores and he was offered 4500 per year.

I visited UMD last week and they said they dont even look at ECs for merit. the exact words of the adcom were you could have started a fortune 500 company in HS but that wont help you get scholarships. And also, I know where you’re coming from. The website says they consider leadership. But yet, who knows what to believe, becuase at Johns Hopkins the adcom said they give 0 merit aid

My son has a full ride (Banneker Key) and wasn’t valedictorian, nor did he break 2300 on the SAT (but he came close). I think you might benefit from raising your CR to 700, but even without taking the SAT again, I think you look very competitive. Good luck!

Thanks to all.
