I think you are aiming too low. For southern colleges, I would look at Furman, Centre, Rhodes, Tulane, Sewanne, University of Richmond, Elon. These are all matches or slight reaches for you.

What do you plan to study?
Vanderbilt
UVA
U Florida
Georgia Tech
Emory

Wake Forest, Davidson

History is my passion; however I will probably end up studying Business.
UVA or Vandy would be my dream colleges, however I figure I don’t stand a chance at these schools??? I guess that’s why it’s called a “reach.”

Davidson has great history but not a formal business program. Many of its graduates end up working for businesses in the Charlotte area though. You won’t stand a chance at UVa or Vanderbilt if you don’t apply. May as well give it a shot.

meco:

Are you a Virginian? If so, you’ve certainly got a shot at UVA if your class rank is in the top 10%. Mabye even if it’s not.

Vanderbilt
Washington U. (St. Louis)
Elon
Richmond
UNC-Chapel Hill
Virginia
Tulane
Centre College (not too familiar with it, but it has a good rep, according to Princeton Review and it’s in Kentucky)
Truman State
Rhodes
William and Mary

The only southern schools of note that may be out of your league are Duke and Emory.

I don’t think that Duke, Emory, Wash U, Vanderbilt, Washington and Lee and Davidson are realistic. I think UVA, Chapel Hill and William and Mary are reaches. The others mentioned in this thread are matches. The colleges that you say you are applying to are probably safeties.

Wow…you guys are making me feel better. Maybe this site has distorted my view, it seems everyone has a 4.0 (uw), 2300 SAT and they have cured cancer.

Maybe I should change my choices. What does this look like?

South Carolina (accepted)
VA TECH
College of Charleston
Elon
UVA (instate)
UNC
Vandy

Creativity is the ability to see possibilities where no one else does. 30 is a great ACT score.

Your SAT puts you about dead center for UVA, and probably above dead center for in-state students. If you’re from NOVA, you chances fall a bit. If you’re from outside NOVA, they improve (about 1/2 of in-state students are from NOVA and the other half from the rest of Virginia, as I recall). On the other hand, UVA tends to pay a fair amount of attention to class rank. Your chances will improve a lot if you are in the top 10%.

Good luck!

your new list looks good. Vandy would be your reach, and maybe UNC. UVA is a perfect match. The others are safeties.

Duke (rep) and WashU (emphasis on raw score and weird admission) is pretty much out. Reach for Vandy, Emory, Davidson. Drop some of that match or safety.

You might even realistically want to add Davidson (like someone else mentioned.
