Hi there. Im planning to go to a CC, and transfer to do Media Studies at UCB. As an international student i am very confused as I’m scared the CC i pick will not have the classes that UCB will require me to attend. I am applying for SMC. But i can’t find a “Media” major in ANY of the community colleges and i am freaking out. Does this mean i can’t transfer to that major at UCB or am i just looking at the wrong places? I played around with Assist but i do not get it. Please help.
@johae18 Familiarize yourself with assist.com – you can put in your community college (SMC) and the college you want to attend (UCB) and the desired major (media studies) and you will get a list of the classes you will need to complete at SMC to transfer to UCB for media studies . You will also have to complete IGETC classes before you transfer to satisfy the specific lower-division general education requirements of your UC college. See your counselor at SMC to plan your courses (and attend any workshops or orientations they offer to familiarize yourself with the process).
Here are the classes for media studies you will need to take at SMC to transfer to UCB. (And you will need to take your IGETC classes to cover undergraduate general ed classes - see your counselor at SMC).
Many CCs don’t have the specific ‘major’ that you want to transfer into. That is totally OK, as long as the CC has all or most of the classes that Freshman and Sophomores need in that particular major. Most universities require students to take a series of ‘general education’ courses in various disciplines, and community colleges are the ideal place to satisfy all of those requirements before you transfer. You will find that the general education courses required to get an Associates degree coincide with the same requirements for a Bachelors degree.
So, if you want to major in Media Studies at UCB, find out what UCB needs from students who are transferring in. As long as the CC you go to has those courses, you are all set; you don’t need to have ‘majored’ in Media Studies at your CC. Lastly check on articulation agreements that exist between UCB and CCs. Commonly, there is an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree that is articulated with universities. This means that if you earn the Associates degree, then you will have automatically satisfied all of the university general education requirements.
Thank you so much! It is much clearer to me now
