Help school doesnt take private loans

I will be attending Tyler junior college in the fall and Im not sure if my Fafsa will cover all my expenses. When i contacted the financial aid office they told me that tjc doesnt accept private loans. My parents have very poor credit and I have no credit. What do I do?

The FAFSA does not cover anything. All is does is provide you with an expected family contribution based on your family’s income and assets. Your EFC determines if you are eligible for Federal aid; pell grants, federal work study, subsidized/unsubsidied stuent loans

If you are in-state for Tyler, you will not have to take out private loans to attend. Even if you should take 20 credits per semester (highly unlikely) the tuition would be $1600/semester or 3200 year.

As long as their Federal EFC is below $4995, you will be eligible for a minimum pell grant of $577. If your family’s EFC is $4996, you get 0, because you are not Pell eligible.

If you are a texas resident, you could be eligible for a state grant (someone from Texas will have to chime in here). In order to be eligible for a Texas grant, you will need to have an EFC of less than $4,000.

For 2012-2013, the maximum amount is:

$7,400 per year for public universities and state college students

[College For All Texans: TEXAS Grant](<a href=“College For All Texans: Home”>College For All Texans: Home)

Depending on your EFC, if you are eligible for Pell, a texas grant and a stafford loan, it should be more than enough for you to cover the cost at Tyler junior college without the need for private loans

Since you filed the FAFSA, you are eligible for $5,500 in Stafford loans - some of which (up to $3,500) may be subsidized (no interest until you graduate or leave school), depending on your income.

If your parents apply for a Parent PLUS loan and are denied, then you can borrow up to an additional $4,000.

As others have said, FAFSA does not give you money. It gives you an EFC which should also have gone to Tyler if you designated on the FAFSA for them to get the information. Tyler should have contacted you by now with your financial aid options. You should call the financial aid office and find out what they are and what more you need to know.

You may get some money through federal and state sources. PELL is a grant you get from the federal government if your EFC is low enough. Stafford Direct loans are also offered, sometimes subsidized, and depending on what the cost of your college (using official COA numbers) and your EFC. There may also be state aid.

It is possible that you are maxed out if you are a commuter and therefore cannot take out any more loans than what the government will give you. You really need to talk to the people at Tyler to find out what your specific situation is with them and if there is anything you will be owing in the fall.

TJC does participate in the Stafford Loan and Parent Plus program, don’t know about private loans.

In Texas, it’s not enough to be an in-state for junior college, you have to live in that district, which includes a majority of Smith County, but not all of the county. If you’re out of district, but not out of state, you pay tuition and fees that fall between the in state/in district rate and the OOS rate.

Texas Grant funds have been cut and are scheduled to be cut even more over the next few years, so there isn’t enough to award everyone who qualifies and that number will continue to decline, however if you took the required high school courses, there might be some funding there.

However most of the junior colleges have some available grant money for books, transportation depending on major and availability of funding, if there is financial need. Most of the kids I know who get some of these funds, get only a small amount, but it’s something. This is not handled by the FA office, but they probably would know where to apply.

TJC does participate in the work study program, so you might check into that. There used to be both Federal Work Study and State Work Study, but I don’t know if the state has cut that program or not.
