Hello. I hate these types of posts but we are trying not to go bananas here. My son didnt read his emails because he was waiting on waitlists at other schools . Anyway he is enrolled in Ohio St and his mother called and they told him he missed the deadline for the dorm contract and they just flat out said “the dorms are closed and full”
I have a hard time believing there are zero options or even a waitlist. Any advice or help would be great . Not the best way to start ty
Maybe call and talk to a higher up
What is Ohio State’s residency requirement?
All unmarried, full-time students within two years of high school graduation must live on campus for their first two years. Students may also live with parents or close relatives or in an approved fraternity or sorority as a means of meeting the residency requirement.
Sorry you’re dealing with this.
This place still seems to be taking waitlist names https://www.ohio-stater.com/ - I agree that escalating re: the residency requirement is the thing to do, but it wouldn’t hurt to get on this waitlist as a possible backup. Maybe there are others in this vein as well.
Unlike some publics, tOSU does allow students to defer matriculation for one year. Gap Year Policy - The Ohio State University I don’t know if your son would be open to that option, or if he has any ideas about how he might spend a gap year, but if all else fails, it would be possible to pull the plug on this fall and start next year without having to reapply, and housing would be guaranteed. August 1st is the deadline to arrange this. It also doesn’t appear that there’s anything prohibiting deferring students from applying elsewhere, so (since it doesn’t sound as if tOSU was his top choice) he could take another run at admissions elsewhere too if he wanted to. FWIW, I have seen that some Americorps gap year programs like City Year are still taking applications for this year in some locations.
Worth inquiring about this…but the issue, I believe, is that this student missed the deadline…but do inquire.
I agree that getting in the waitlist posted above is a good idea.
Did he ever submit a housing contract?
“
We make the housing assignments during the summer based on the date we received the completed contract and payment and will email the housing assignments along with roommate(s) contact information in mid-July to the student’s Ohio State email account. “
See about working for University Housing; if there is shortage of student workers, maybe he could be on a waitlist and get pulled off.
Very unofficial advice not specific to OSU, but you could try seeing if there are Instagram groups that search for roommates and post that you are looking for a roommate group. Then let your school know you have a group you’d like to join. Ask if a payment portal is open, and pay there if possible. At U of A, they told my daughter (who missed her deadline) that they pull kids in this way before filling random slots from those who missed the deadline. Other kids find campus-adjacent roommates this way as well. Two years ago, a friend used the same process at Bama and was pulled in late. Good luck!
To what are you referring?
Sorry, computer glitch!
Hey! I am in the same unfortunate situation. Any change or update with your status? I have yet to receive any indication of a housing assignment.
OSU had record 80,000 applicants and more kids accepted offers than they thought resulting in the biggest incoming frosh class ever in OSU history. Good news—school is in high demand–bad news–crunch on housing.
