Help! Son wants the impossible for Christmas!

When my son was that slim (and that fashion conscious) he did alot of shopping at H&M. No online sales, but if you have a store near you, there should be some interesting choices in both dress and casual pants…very European, very fashion forward. At one point, my son purchased a pair of “man capris” at H&M. Very affordable because they are trendy.

Zara, men’s side

I ditto with buying stuff in europe but also would recommend clothing from REI/Patagonia etc. There are synthetic woven material that look and feel nice but designed for travel and hard wear.

They also have cuts that are slimmer and stylish not ward cleavers chinos.

How about LLbean? My DH (over 6’ 5" - 155 lbs) has a lot of luck with their tall mediums, and finding pants 32 x 36. I think they do 30 x 36 also, and hem to size.

Here is a website I have never heard of: [Men’s Dress Pants for the Tall, Thin and Skinny - LankyLife](http://www.lankylife.com/men/categories/13/)

It seems you go in by category and then make suggestions. By the way I really do feel your pain. I have a 6’5" high school junior who is wearing a 30x36 pant.

Orvis has his size and the pants are cool. Not super cheap but they are on sale at $69.

[Men’s Khaki Chino Pants / Double-Washed Ultimate Chinos – Orvis](http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=9X49)

GRRR…on second thought, they do not have 30-31 waist. Nevermind. :)

J Crew does have 5 styles of chinos that come in 30/35, like these:

[Men’s tall - pants - Classic-fit essential chino - J.Crew](http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/MensBrowse/Men_Special_Sizes/tall/pants/PRDOVR~64782/64782.jsp)

Not sure how wrinkle-free they really are.

Pleated pants are actually recommended for tall skinny guys:

[Dressing Tall and Short Men | Italy](http://www.lifeinitaly.com/fashion/menswear-body-height)

I second the suggestion for him to shop in Italy. One place I was going to recommend before I noticed you were in Iowa is Sisley, an offshoot of Benetton. My H shops there because he is also tall and skinny and they make very trim fitting and fashionable pants! No pleats to be seen anywhere. Their pants are cut like Italian pants, very slim fitting. He has bought great looking pants that are casual but not jeans.

Your S may surprise you. If he is interested in design and in how he dresses, at least to the extent of establishing his own look, he might really enjoy the very different clothes that Italy has to offer. It’s a lot more fun than shopping at the local mall where most of the offerings are not cut for folks like him.

You might try some of the companies that sell travel clothes like Travel Smith. I poked around a bit and found one called ExOfficio and they had some plain khakis with serious no wrinkle qualities and they seemed to have small waist and your choice of inseams. You might check it out.

Cabela’s cargo pants. They have several different styles and multiple colors. Waist sizes start at 30 and length can be selected up to 35 1/2". Cargo pants are great for travel. Who knows what a young person thinks about style, but they do seem to be a current fad.

bunsenburner–I agree!

My S is 6’1" and just about outgrowing everything available off the rack at Old Navy etc. Slim and tall doesn’t exist, but short (or average) and rotund is everywhere!

And ditto on the bra thing. Even 36 “almost A” is difficult to find.

S has 30" waist, tho not tall. When we buy at Nordstrums’ sale, they tailor for free. Because S is such a difficult shopper, we’ve befriended one saleslady. She leaves me message when sale will happen, and puts away clothes for son. She only met son once, but she chooses slim tops, soft fabrics, perfect colors. For $10, she mailed his entire new wardrobe to him, X-country.
GAP also has good selection of cackis and jeans.

Try Nordstroms or Nordstroms Rack. DH wears a 31X35, sometimes a 30X35. I buy a lot of his pants at Nordstroms Rack. Jos. A. Banks has a good range of sizes, too.

H & M is your answer. Stylish, inexpensive clothes in slim sizes. Lovely stuff for men. European, and some polyester content, so packable and dries quickly.

Also, my slim S, (around your S’s size) was very happy with chinos bought at LLBean (but not the roomier cut).

I’ll make you a deal, you find me a zhu zhu hamster and I will find you some pants!! lol.

Since your son is in design, I second the notion of just giving him the money. He is probably going to be much better than you at figuring out exactly what items will maintain his personal fashion statement!

I also second the Eagle Creek packing system. We have folders for things that need to be no-wrinkles, and several sized of the soft zippered packing “cubes”. I travel with a 1/4 cube for the electrical cords, alarm clock, scissors, can-opener etc., a 1/2 cube each for socks and undies, and a full cube for t-shirts, p.j.s and other things that survive being smushed. Since I started using this gear, I have never had to dig for a missing sock. [Eagle Creek](http://www.eaglecreek.com/) even has a nifty “What do I need” section to help you work out your packing strategy.
