Help! Son wants the impossible for Christmas!

Oldest son is off to Rome for the next semester, but he will spend a good bit of time in Paris as well. He knows from experience that traveling and living in both cities is more comfortable in well cut slacks (not matter what Italians say, they still think of jeans as uber-casual). So he wants nice slacks for Christmas, but here are the issues:

1.He is in design (not fashion), so he wants something with a little style, a little flair – no Land’s End khakis.
2. He will be wearing them with Chuck Taylor’s low cuts most of the time. It’s a fashion statement.
3. He will be traveling mostly with a backpack, so he wants something he can roll up and stuff in a backpack. And that he can wash and wear.
4. He wants several pairs and will most likely wear them to death, so I don’t want to spend a fortune on them.
5. He needs a 30/35 or at most a 31/35. It is hard enough buying him jeans, but this one has got me stumped.

He will wear them with long sleeve cotton dress shirts. (Which if they are long enough for him flap in the breeze, but if they are fitted they end at about his belly button. Son is 6’4 and when he came home at Thanksgiving he weighed 152.)

Anybody got any ideas?

How about the gap?? or banana republic. Maybe American Eagle.

No ideas - but congratulations on having found pants to fit him up to this point! Couldn’t have been easy. A co-worker’s husband is about the same size; I’m making a note to ask her about this tomorrow. Hoping you get your answer here sooner.

With the fattening of America, it’s rare for stores these days to stock many, if any, pants with inseams greater than the waist. It will be much easier to find pants that are 35/30 than some that are 30/35. I know from sad experience. I have to go from store to store in the mostly vain hope of finding some for myself.

My recommendation - go to a nice store that sells unhemmed pants and buy several slacks he likes that fit around the waist and have the inseams custom-fitted.

I know you said no Land’s End Khaki’s but these [Bills Khakis: Pants: Twill Pants: Sport Utility Twills for Business Causal Attire](http://www.billskhakis.com/shop/pants_twill.html) Bills Khaki’s are highly recommended.

Why not just give S the money to buy appropriate slacks in Europe? In France, sales are twice a year, and January is one time.

Having had the wonderful experience of shopping in Paris during the summer sales, I would far prefer to do that than to buy clothing here and bring the clothes to Europe.

Once when we were fortunate enough to spend the entire summer in Paris while H was working there, I bought new clothes for younger S’s fall school year. Since then, he has outgrown the clothes, but I kept and wear his outgrown sweaters. I may not look like a fashionista in them, but I feel like one. :)

I know that you don’t want Lands End pants but they do have 30 x 36 pants in a new Tailored Fit cut. This cut is slimmer in the leg and butt (lol) so he might like this more modern fit.

How about Express (if there is still one open near you)? They have slim cut slacks in longer lengths. Most of their new “jeans style” slacks have spandex in them (about 2-5% ) and this puts a huge comfort factor into them.

Or…as suggested…buy them in Europe where getting a long slim cut will not be an issue at all.

I feel your pain!!!

My DS (who wears 31x34 slim jeans) has had some luck with Kenneth Cole slacks. Found a pair recently at Macy’s and they are washable. They are cut pretty narrow in butt and thighs. I think they were abut $60, which is more than I wanted to spend, but after a few hours of shopping, I decided just finding something was worth it.

He wears a black pair with high-top Chucks, a black dress shirt and a light-colored tie. That’s his fashion statement, apparently.

He is 6’2" and 145 lbs. We found some nice “slim cut” Izod dress shirts at Steinmart for less than $25. The tails are long.

I’m not sure that he will be easily able to buy pants of that size in Europe. Europeans on average are much slimmer but at the same time shorter than Amreicans. Another question is how much time he will be interested in dedicating to shopping (for example, I can bet my life that the answer will be “zero nanoseconds” if we are talking about my H).

Higher end department stores will be your better bet for finding pants that are derssy yet easy to care for. For example, Nordstrom has a line of pants that does not wrinke easily (I know because H has a couple of pairs, and they need no ironing when they come out of the dryer), they come in 36 length which Nordstrom will happily tailor for your son:

Check their other styles that come in this length:

Not sure about the fit but what about Urban Outfitters?

Zappos! Online shopping, not just for shoes, free returns. Tried 6 pairs of pants, kept 2, sent the rest back, I think you have a long time for turn around (like a year or something!). A zillion styles. Good luck!

For packing dressier items, this folder from Eagle Creek is a huge help:

[Eagle Creek Pack-It Folder 15](http://www.eaglecreek.com/accessories/packing_folders/Pack-It-Folder-15-40153/)

H travels twice a month, and he claims that his dress shirts and slacks need zero to minimal ironing if he packs them in his favorite folder. The folder is somewhat flexible and can be stuffed into a backpack. There are larger size folders as well.

J Crew or Jos A Bank? When all else fails try JC Penney custom fit talls. Also Men’s Warehouse had one style of Calvin Kleins that are the more fitted contemporary fit.

Actually I had good luck ordering long skinny khakis from Eddie Bauer online. (They don’t carry them in the store.) I also know both Banana Republic and Gap offer tall sizes for men online.

Thanks for all the ideas. The Nordstrom pants look good, but I’m not sure how he’ll feel about the pleats – again, its a fashion thing. I will have to check Zappos, I buy a lot of shoes from them but I didn’t even think of them for pants.

As BunsonBurner predicts, son will have no patience for shopping in Rome, even though it easier for him to buy clothes in Italy (well a least in Florence, tall and very thin is fairly common for a Florentine).

And Coureur, son claims that it is a sad world in which you can walk in to Target and buy a pair of 50/28s but you can’t buy a pair of 30/36.

When I saw the thread title, I thought your son asked for world peace. Seriously, finding stylish pants that would fit your son is just as impossible to achieve  I’m doing some online shopping as we speak, and I checked every site I serached for pants in this size. Very slim pickings, indeed. Why do clothes manufacturers think that “tall” always means “big” (and to extend my rant, why do bra makers think that there are no ladies who wear size 38AA bras?) I see a business opp here. :)

I second J Crew.

World peace would be easier than finding pants that fit him. Even jeans are tough, he mostly wears a 31 in jeans with a belt, but he spends a lot of time hitching up his pants.
