Help suggest a vacation in Mexico on June ~3Monday - 17Monday.
College son will be doing an internship in Mexico City.
Thought is to do a family vacation before he meets his host family on 6/9Sunday, starting work on 6/10Monday.
6/3-6/9 - son and I are in Mexico
6/8-6/17 - daughter and husband join us, overlapping with son on 6/8 and 6/9
Does CDMX have enough stuff to entertain us for 15 days? Or should we consider an additional separate part of Mexico? If yes, which city?
Hotel or airbnb/vrbo?
Depending on numerous things, extended family MAY join us.
We’re foodie (but doesn’t have to be fancy: love local dives/fresh seafood/tacos/drinks),
don’t want too many days at a beach (pool is good)
enjoy awesome sites such as pyramids, don’t need to visit a ton of museums/churches
while the heat/humidity doesn’t bother my family, I will be quite miserable (hope to offset with cooling libations)
I’ve read this thread and have taken many great suggestions.
That’s a lot of time just in Mexico City. I’d probably fly out to Merida (supposed to be great on its own) or Cozumel and go to Chichen Itza, Tulum and Coba. Chichen Itza is amazing. Coba is in the jungle and feels like being on an Indiana Jones set. You can rent a bike and ride all around the paths, which is fun.
I love the ruins of Tulum, even if it is overrun with tourists. Go first thing in the day. If you bring swimsuits you can make your way down to the beach and swim below the ruins. It’s a spectacular setting.
I’ve heard great things about day trips to Puebla, Cuernavaca, and Taxco. There’s so much to do in Mexico and you have a lot of time. Much as I enjoyed CDMX, I wouldn’t want to be there for two whole weeks, though I’m sure you’d find enough to do. It would just be a shame to miss other great stuff.
While on a recent flight 2 30 year olds recounted a tale that they were on their way to Tulum when stopped by “police” who demanded $1500 on the spot. The police drove the couple to an ATM. This happened last week. Be careful.
The three C’s – Cabo, Cancun, and Cozumel – are all fun, but different.
What types of activities do you enjoy?
A very basic comparison of relative strengths:
Cancun: Nightlife, prettiest water
Cozumel: Snorkeling, slower pace
Cabo: Nightlife, beautiful rock formations/El Arco
All three have fun day trips on hand: From Cozumel or Cancun you can check out mayan ruins at Chichen Itza and Tulum. From Cabo, there are beautiful beaches and snorkeling at Cabo Pulmo national park (check out playa el arbolito in particular) and a neat little artsy town called Todos Santos.
ETA: If you do make the trip out to Cabo Pulmo/El Arbolito, be prepared for a bumpy ride. Best to rent a 4x4, preferably a Wrangler.
Hope they reported it. There are a couple of different sites that tourists can use to report such activity. These scam police bribes are known about and apparently it’s not that difficult to get out of paying, but that’s a different thread. It seems to happen primarily to tourists who are in rental cars at night.
There are scammers everywhere. Gangs of pickpockets in Rome, tea room scammers in Shanghai, con artsists in Times Sqare, you name it. As with anywhere else, be aware of your surroundings.
Note: Coba ruins are a national archaeological site, not the same as Cabo🙂. Also, visitors can climb up the pyramids at Coba, but not in the other parks I mentioned.
D and her fiance, in their 30’s did a Mexico trip and split their time between Mexico City (first stop) and Merida (second stop) and claimed it to be a perfect match. They love food and raved about the food and even got a hands on experience of helping to make tortillas (?) or something similar. MC was more about exploring and Merida provided the beach - their inexpensive AIRBNB even had a little private dipping pool.
