HELP!! Thoughts on Volunteer Work When Applying for Prep School Scholarship?

Hello all-
I am an eighth grader and I currently attend a magnet school. Everyone in my school is competing for a spot at Baylor School, the most prestigious school in our city which has a beautiful campus and diverse opportunities. I, after being urged to apply early, was fortunately able to be accepted last year and gain a significant amount of financial aid, which is important for my middle class and seperated parents. Baylor has been very accomedating- they promised to save my spot, which is apparently very rare. This year, however, I want to apply for their scholarship, which is 10,000 a year with no reapplication, and would cut down the cost for my education to only 3,000 a year, which is 20,000 off their regular cost (with the financial aid). This would be incredible- I would be able to utilize their trips offered and wouldn’t have to worry about the additional costs of any opportunities I would want to take advantage of. However, their scholarship is based around academic merit, which I have plenty of, AND community impact, which is very hard to find. I have about 6 weeks to figure out how to make a “lasting impact on the community” and while there are some volunteer opportunities, there are none that I can think of that would be easy to get to and really stand out. Help? Thoughts? Thanks!

How about a running a book drive to benefit a school library’s or build tinyfree library’s in neighborhoods. Collect blankets, food and treats for animal charities or jackets for the homeless. offer to read, play cards in a senior center.

Best to pick something that reflects your interests.

Says it all. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities, and volunteering of any kind is awesome and worth the time. But you may find some too generic (and by that I mean that it is done by many… and I don’t intend that in a offensive fashion). To have a truly unique volunteering profile you need to assess your interest and either a) create, which might be too time consuming or have other personal issues or b) look, search around, the internet is the ultimate research tool and keep in mind for somethings you don’t need to be a local (like you can volunteer locally or online for a international project, etc)…Also, it should be something you enjoy and can stick too (think long term…college applications will be coming up soon O_O )

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help, but honestly this is a question dependent on your personal opinions/beliefs and only you know what will suit you.
