HELP!! UCLA vs UIUC

I got accepted in both UCLA and UIUC, Civil Engineering.
I have honestly hit a dead end. I am a European international but i was born in the US and i have US-citizen privileges.

UIUC is definitely known for and is best at engineering. Its program is more well known and probably better than UCLA’s. But, UCLA as a school overall is better and has a greater reputation.

Ill probably be paying 3-4K more at UCLA but I won a 1500$ scholarship so i guess u can consider the costs to be equal.

The deal is i could probably get to Greece faster from LA (direct flight to Europe) than Champaign from which i have to go to Chicago, then to a european city (frankfurt, london or madrid) then to Athens, Greece.

I wld like to know which one is best if u want to go to a good grad school for business (im talking Ivy League) and best for my future career.

So what wld u choose??

… for Internationals like yourself.

Are you familiar with both schools, ie, their locations, campus life, etc?

Both will undoubtedly be rigorous, so I wouldn’t worry about that end.

I have a great deal of confidence in Int’ls like yourself because I know you’ll do well. Country of origin doesn’t matter, the Int’ls I’ve met are excellent students, so I don’t doubt at all you’ll be attending an Ivy MBA program.

The main thing, I think, is to visit both, get a feel for both, and see which one fires you up (inspires) the most because of the things you mentioned, I’d say, “pick’em,” essentially flip a coin, which means I can’t separate the two wrt your circumstances.

There are so many considerations you need to look at besides airports and prices. Is there a specific field of Civil engineering you are interested in? Illinois has a larger, more varied department. Do you want to be near the ocean? Do you care about weather? Would you prefer to be in a large city or small rural town? What other types of classes do you want to take?

You will get an excellent education at either school. Pick whichever one you think you will be happiest at.

All the flights I found on a quick search show flying from LA takes several hours longer and there are no non-stops either. So that’s a non-issue. Also cheaper out of Ohare.

“I am a European international but i was born in the US and i have US-citizen privileges.”

Um no, you aren’t international. You are a US citizen educated abroad. There is a huge difference. You don’t need a visa, you are eligible to apply for federally determined (FAFSA) aid, you can borrow the maximum amount of Stafford Loan each year, you can get a job off campus, and when you graduate, you can take a job anywhere in the country.

The standard answer is “both of these are great places, you can safely choose the one that is least expensive for you”. Did you run the figures through any of the calculators like this one?
To get into a good MBA program you will need at bare minimum two full years of work experience, preferably five. Unless you can convince your employer to pay for your MBA, you will have to cover that cost yourself. Think about where the money is going to come from.

It is OK for you to contact the Civil Engineering departments at each university, and ask them where their graduates end up. The Career Centers on each campus can also give you that kind of information. If your long-term goal is to return to Greece or another EC country to work, would either of these universities be more likely to make you an attractive applicant for a job there? Again, that is something the Career Center may be able to help you with.

Good luck!

… “international,” so happymomof1 can post the work and study privileges of these students in the US.

Generally, maybe predominantly true but not always. Someone who’s an absolute star at the undergrad level might get ins right upon obtaining a bac degree.

It appears the best way to get to O’hare is via bus? UIUC students?

I would go to UCLA.

You can get from Champaign to Athens in 15 hours 45 minutes with connections in Chicago and Rome. The flight from LAX is about the same time but with a single connection, either in Newark or London.
