D26, who attends a competitive public HS in Georgia, wants to be a teacher in elementary or middle school with a psychology minor. Her GPA is good, not great, around 3.2. She has dyslexia which wasn’t diagnosed until late thanks to the COVID years. She’s also passionate about chorus and would like to continue in college after participating for four years in high school (not as a music major though). She doesn’t want to go to UGA which is fine because I doubt she could get in anyway.
Ideas for a good early education program that also has a good chorus? So far we’ve toured Berry and GCSU but also looking for other ideas. It doesn’t have to be in Georgia but fairly close.
Thanks!
Does she want to be a teacher in Georgia or elsewhere?
Colleges in a given state will typically have programs that are the best matches to the same state teacher credentialing requirements.
With the national teacher shortage, most states have pretty generous reciprocal certificate programs with other states, so I wouldn’t worry as much about going out-of-state if that’s the best fit for your D.
Lander (SC): About 3700 undergrads, non-majors can participate in the main choir, and there’s even a Montessori emphasis available within the early childhood major.
U. of North Carolina - Greensboro: About 14k undergrads. There are more than 20 music ensembles, with at least 3 vocal based one. Also has popular early childhood offerings.
Coastal Carolina and College of Charleston (both SC) may also be worth checking out. I do think that GCSU is great for your D’s interests.
