Hi,
I am a junior at the Honors College at Stony Brook University. My overall GPA is 3.73. BCPM GPA is 3.79. Humanities GPA is 3.65. Here is a list of Extracurriculum activities: Member of Alpha Tau Freshman Honor Society in Stony Brook University; Volunteer as the big sib during summer orientation of 2003 and 2004; volunteer in JANLIAN Medical Group, LLC(
Since sophomore year of High school); Member of Special Service Council of the Undergraduate Student Government (Spring and Fall 2004); Event Coordinator of Alpha Epsilon Delta (Premed Honor society) (Fall 2004 and Spring 2005); Member of Sigma Beta Honor Society (Fall 2004 and Spring 2005); President of National Organization for College Placement (Stony Brook Chapter)(Spring 2004);President of Higher Education for All Teens (Fall2004) ; TA for Honor Chemistry (Fall 2003, Spring 2004); TA for general Chemistry (for Pay -Fall 2005). I am also doing research this semester in school. I also tutor online for pay since Spring 2003. I tutor in average 15 hrs/week during school year and 3 hrs/week during summer. I haven’t take my MCAT yet, I will take it this August. I will do research in Hong Kong University this summer. What are my chance to get into medical school? I am particularly interested in Stony Brook Medical School. What are some other factor that may help my chance to get into medical school? Thanks for your advice.

You have a great start for medical school. Stony Brook Medical School is difficult to get into, but you are on the right track. Your GPA is in the average range for a Stony Brook Med school applicant, so you are in good shape there. What I see lacking is medical experience such as volunteering at the hospital. Your research experience is very good and Stony Brook likes that. Are you considering applying for the MD PhD program?

You need to get around a 32 on the MCATS and you will be a strong applicant in my opinion. Use this summer to study hard for your MCATs. Good Luck!

Hi, I volunteer in a community medical school since high school. Does that count toward medical experience? Or do they only consider hosptial exp?

Depends-what exactly do you do, and for how many hours.

i volunteer in average 5 hrs per week now. When I was in hs, i volunteer about 10 hrs/week. In the clinic, i work between receptionist to billing. I also go to volunteer in the blood bank once in a while under the Sigma Beta Honors Society. Also, I am not sure i should apply for MD/PHD program. I don’t think my GPA is high enough for that. I am also pretty open to any med school around NY. I want to be a pediatrician. Thanks for your help.
