HELP!! whats the GRE test?

hey guys,

i’m from the UK and i’ll be applying in nov/dec for a few of the ivy leagues for post grad studies. They tell me i have to take the General record exam (GRE test). does anyone know anything about it?or has anyone taken it?is it easy?

any advice would be great

its similar to the sat- there is a verbal section, consisting of antonyms, sentence completions, analogies and reading comprehension; and a math section which consists of algebra and geometry- no calculus or trig needed. each section is out of 800 points, like the sat. the math section is pretty straightforward (in fact, even if you get an 800, you will only be in the 94th percentile). the verbal tends to be much trickier (a 740 is in the 99th percentile). there are also 2 essays, one is 30 minutes and the other is 45 minutes. the essays are scored out of 6.

thanks for the info. what exactly are you referring to when you say i’d be in the 94th or 99th percentile? and what kind of marks would the ivy leagues admissions officers be looking for?

94th percentile= youve done better than 94% of the people in the country.
top grad schools typically want you to score above the 85th percentile.
also, you should know that often, the ivies dont have the top programs (for example, in my field, harvards program is terrible, and some of the top programs are from “3rd tier” undergrad institutions). so dont base your applications on undergrad reputation.

okay, thank you very much for your help!
