Help with a specific type of SAT question

I always have trouble with this one “easy” type of critical reading question where they ask for the meaning of the word in the passage. The questions are usually like “In line --, — most nearly means” i always end up getting it wrong and even after i look at the answer explanation it doesn’t make sense. One example is where i put the answer to a question as territory, interpreting the answer choice to mean under the realm of the word being defined; but in the answer explanation, the book said that territory referred to a geographical region, and was therefore clearly false…I don’t understand questions like these as i always feel the answers can be interpreted in different ways.

Does anyone else have the problem and know how to help? thanks

For these it is never what the “common” definition of the word is. For example, in one practice SAT, it asks for the definition of “position.” It did not mean “location” or “rank,” but “view” as in “His position on raising taxes wasn’t clear.”
