Help with AP U.S. History?

Now that we’re basically done with the course since the AP exam is done, our teacher decided to assign us a project in which we have to read a non-fiction book related to anything in the history of the U.S. (why can’t she just let us watch movies for the rest of the year like a normal AP teahcer??). Anyways, I have no idea on what book to choose, and wanted to know if anyone had any good suggestions. My only requirements are that 1) it has to be an interesting subject like 9/11 or Hamilton vs. Burr (I’d really hate to read a dull biography), and 2) that it isn’t too long (around 300 pages at most)

Uncle Tom’s Cabin
The Federalist Papers
1776
The Jungle
Silent Spring
On the Road
The Feminine Mystique
Common Sense

The Jungle is the first that comes to mind for me.

Profiles in Courage by JFK

I personally find it interesting. It’s basically about some of the bravest acts that some Americans have done in history.

On the Road.

Jungle and on the road are fiction

Band of Brothers. It’s actually a pretty decent book, and its about an American paratrooper company that fought in World War 2.

The Things They Carried is an EXCELLENT book about Vietnam. It’s exciting and is very informational about the war.

Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi. It’s the story of the Manson murders in the 1960s written by the man who prosecuted them. It’s fascinating, suspenseful, and definitely reads like a thriller fiction. It gives a lot of insight into hippie culture, too.

The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder by the same man is also very good.

Oh oops I just saw you wanted something not long. Helter Skelter probably isn’t a good choice then. Maybe The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe? I can’t remember how long it is, but it’s a great non-fiction book about the beginnings of space exploration and NASA.
