right now, i am intending to pursue a BS degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology.

i am trying to figure out what courses to register for and how to do so.

i have the following generally planned out:

Introductory Chemistry I 030.101

General Chemistry Lab I 030.105

Calculus (I or II, i’ll decide based on the placement test)

An H or S course

what i am really confused on is the H or S course that i have to take. what does that mean and how do i find out what courses i can take?

also, i am expecting to get AP credit for Biology so i can get out of Gen Bio I and II and the Labs. if i get exempt from those, what would i take my first semester then?

Your schedule is up to you-and you should probably discuss this with your academic adviser. The S or H course can be anything labeled with an S (social science) or H (humanity). A lot of people take Intro to Macro (180.101), which is 3 credits. Take what interests you. I took a 400-level history seminar my first semester because I was interested in the topic.

They’re not listed in one place. Go through the course handbook, and courses that meet an S or H requirement will have it listed. Classes in departments such as english, history, and classics will have an H whereas courses in economics and political science will have an S. Basically, humanities department courses will have an H and social science department courses will have an S.

In addition to Wealth’s post here’s the jhu course catalog you can look through for humanities and social science courses:
[JHU Catalog 2005-2007](http://catalog.jhu.edu/)
Also here’s the department website for Molecular and Cellular Bio:
[BS Program](http://www.bio.jhu.edu/Undergrad/BSProgram.aspx)
Gen Bio is actually not a requirement for the BS degree at all, but you could still transfer creds for it if you AP out. However for what looks like all of the upper level bio courses you will be taking, Chem 101 is a must, so i dont think you will be taking any bio first semester since you got to get chem done first. What you probably have to take instead (since you only have about 11 credits now) is General Physics/lab since that is an initial requirement as well.

Hope that helps, I’m an incoming bme freshman myself, but know several MCB majors

My first semester went like:
-intro chem (3)
-intro chem lab (1)
-calculus (4)
-macro (for S credit) (3)
-intro to latin american studies (for H credit and writing credit) (3)

I liked this schedule because it was a very broad first semester, and it gets one of your writing’s out of the way (12 total credits needed to grad), and also gets S and H credits. This seemed to work well, and only came out to about 14 credits. Let me know if you have any questions

Macro was easy. I’m an econ(/applied math) major but I came in with no real econ background, and found it extremely doable (with Maccini).

Intro to Latin American Studies was horrendous. I took it because it met once a week for just 2 hours and gave me 3 writing credits. I did fine in the end but I definitely WOULD NOT take it again if I could go back. Probably the most boring class at Hopkins.
