Help with Decision (ASU v. Ole Miss v. UC - Santa Barbara)

Hello, I’m looking to get any new information or opinions about these schools, if you have anything to say feel free to shoot it my way. I’ll be studying business and I’m from St. Louis, MO. (I know UCSB doesn’t have a business school so I’d study Economics).

Are they all affordable? Are you a transfer or did you get off the Freshman waitlist?

I like Arizona State, as they have strong accounting, data analytics and finance degrees, and many other majors in their business school, like tourism focus, or healthcare focuses. Its somewhat preprofessional compared to earning an economics degree at Santa Barbara,if that might be something you are after. Do you want to study accounting or some other aspect of business? If accounting is your goal, ASU is a fit, but other aspects of business may be well covered. You can still take economics classes at ASU too.

OP appears to be a high school junior from Missouri and is searching for pros and cons of various schools for applying. I don’t see any mention of grades, test scores, or financial constraints in other threads so it’s difficult to advise.

UCSB will be full pay at $65K/year to attend and offer little to no financial aid so make sure your parents are willing to spend that kind of money for your Undergrad. What is your UC GPA (capped weighted and fully weighted)? Only AP/IB classes taken 10-11th grades count for the extra weighting in the GPA calculation.

What are your test scores? HS course rigor? SAT II subject test scores? EC’s?

UCSB Freshman profile for 2018:

GPA and test scores of middle 25%-75% students

High School GPA (capped weighted UC) :4.00 - 4.26
ACT Composite Score : 28 - 34
ACT English Language Arts: 26 - 31
SAT Evidence Based Reading & Writing: 630 - 720
SAT Mathematics: 640 - 780
SAT Essay: 15 - 18

You are admitted as a Pre-Econ major. In order to qualify for admission into the Economics major, students must complete Economics 1, 2, and 10A with a UC grade-point average of 2.85 or above. No grade lower than a C in pre-major courses will be accepted. In addition, students must complete PSTAT 109 or 120A, Math 2A-B or 3A-B or 34A-B, and Writing 105AA-ZZ or 107AA-ZZ or 109AA-ZZ with a grade of “C” or higher; the grades in these courses will not be used in computing the pre-major GPA but will apply to the overall major GPA.
Acceptance into the pre-major does not guarantee admission to full major status.

None of these are any better than your instate public (at instate rates).

Why are you looking to get out of MO?

Yea, I’d go to Mizzou if you want a big school or Truman if you want a smaller school. You’ll spend a LOT more money to not make a lot more money once you enter the job market.

Note that while a beautiful location, UCSB can be very difficult to get to, even within California.

You can take a shuttle from LAX to SB (about 100 miles to the North of the airport), and they estimate around 4 hours without traffic, but only rarely will you find no traffic.

There is a small airport in nearby Santa Barbara, but that means you’ll likely need to coordinate your flight transfer from either LAX or SFO, then still need to uber/lyft to Isla Vista. Note that the rule of thumb is: the smaller the airport, the higher the cost. The short one-way flight ranges between $200-400.

There is now a direct Denver to Santa Barbara Flight on Frontier, but may not help a Missouri student that much.
