Help with honors section please!

My D was awarded the John and Abigail Adams scholarship as well as the Koplik Certificate of Mastery Award for excelling on Massachusetts MCAS (standardized test). Should these be listed in the honors section of the common app? It would mean having to eliminate two other honors, honor roll and presidents award for educational excellence. I’m not sure which ones are more important. Any suggestions?

It depends on what the other honours are, and I am not familiar with the specific honours you listed in your first sentence, but I will say that honour roll doesn’t seem that important based on the other things you listed… Theoretically, her transcript will show that her grades have been excellent, so I don’t think listing honour roll is necessary to list. I don’t know what he President’s award is, but that sounds impressive… if it’s a national award, I recommend keeping it. GENERALLY, you want to list the honours that have higher “levels of recognition”.

Thank you for responding! Her honors are as follows:
–Class of 2015 female undergraduate award(one awarded) -11- school award
–Stonehill College Book Award(one awarded) -11-school award
–NHS -11,12-school award
–John and Abigail Adams scholarship-12-state award
–highest honors 9,10,11-school award
–President’s Award for Educational Excellence 9,10,11–This is an award given through the school at the end of each year, for those achieving honor roll…It is signed by POTUS, but I’m sure there are thousands of these given out throughout the country every year.

(She has decided not to include the Koplik Certificate of Mastery Award since although she was awarded it, there is a further application step needed to actually get the award/scholarship and it basically gives the same amount of $ as the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship, so she will not be going any further with it)

So there are five spaces available for six awards, listed above. We are debating between dropping the honor roll or President’s Award…since they are both based on honor roll. What do you think she should eliminate?

Personally, I would drop the “highest honors”… that’s something that pretty much every school has, and there’s nothing that really stands out about it. To me, the President’s Award seems more interesting and seems like the more impressive of the two.

I’d get rid of the “highest honors” too. They’ll see her transcript and it will probably be pretty obvious that she got highest honors. There’s even a possibility that the transcript may say that, or that the school profile they send describes the criteria for highest honors.

Ok, thanks to both of you for your input!
