Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

In my hand lies a quote refrigerator magnet. My mom tells me how cute it would be as a gift to my friends and advises me to buy my party favors soon. It was summer and I was turning sixteen the following year in January. My family and I typically celebrate our birthdays by having dinner in a restaurant of our choice, but this time, my parents gave me the opportunity to plan my very first party. I was in charge of most aspects of the party, such as choosing the guests, party favors, games, and so on, and my mom would be involved only to reserve and pay for the whole event. During the months before my party, I made sure that I finished my homework early so that I can start planning all details of my party. I enjoyed the trips to Hyatt to discuss the venue, food, decorations, and set up and the trips to Shop for Less and Ben Franklin Craft Store to look for vases, fake white orchids, and floating candles for my centerpieces, bottles and ribbons for my invitations, and paper lanterns for my decorations. I had fun planning and organizing my party as much as I did celebrating my birthday.
At that moment, I did not notice immediately that I wanted to be an event coordinator. My birthday party was just the spark needed to light my excitement for event planning. So far, I aspired to pursue a business career since I joined Junior Achievement. Business is just a general term that covers a variety of job positions, and I didn’t know what I specifically wanted to be. Gradually, I noticed how much I’ve unintentionally exposed myself to event planning. For example, over the summer, my friend Dionne told me that she was going to have a party and, of course, I excitedly asked if I can help her before she asked for my help. As I was choosing what committee I wanted to be in charge of for Student Council, I was primarily interested in social committee, which handles the school’s major events. My first event that I helped planned for this school year was Frosh Frolic, an annual dance for freshmen, which everyone seemed to enjoy their time. In order to achieve my dream career, I plan on studying business administration and management so I may either work as a certified event planner or begin my own company that provides event planning services.
