1)USC students are known to be involved. Briefly describe a non-academic pursuit (such as service to community or family, a club or sport, or work, etc.,) that best illustrates who you are, and why it is important to you.

My service in the Singapore Army will stick with me for the rest of my life. Prior to my enlistment, I was a naïve individual with a misguided sense of entitlement, working only toward the fulfillment of my self-interests.
This changed during my service as a soldier. The military was to me an incubator for personal growth. It taught me humility, respect and most importantly, resilience. Over the course of my two year tenure, I rose through the ranks till I was a First Lieutenant. The journey was tough and taught me much. I was placed in countless situations unique to the military. Corporal punishments meted out to enforce discipline and instill humility, military traditions to teach respect, and training exercises conducted in arduous physical conditions designed to build resilience. The lessons learned during these exercises were tough ones, and it is my personal belief that the harder it takes for a lesson to be learned, the stronger it sticks with you.
I will forever cherish the memories of my military service. It has equipped me with the courage to venture into unknown territories, and the resilience to endure the chosen path to the very end. For that I am grateful.

2)Describe your academic interests and how you plan to pursue them at USC. Please feel free to address your first- and second-choice major selections.

As a child, I always dreamed of travelling the world and learning about new cultures. The sheer diversity of different peoples throughout the world and the fact that I could enjoy my favorite carbonated beverages whilst abroad fascinated me. This ability of businesses to transcend geographic boundaries and communication barriers stuck with me ever since. Above and beyond that, socially responsible global businesses inspire me to bring about positive change in a world where it is sorely required.
Innovation and social responsibility are two major keys to the betterment of human lives. Businesses today form the vanguard of innovation. As such, they present a promising vessel from which change can be brought forth. When multiple businesses on a global scale innovate while keeping social responsibility in mind, I believe tackling global issues such as hunger, disease and poverty will be much easier.

With its diverse international student body and emphasis on innovation and social responsibility, I believe that The Marshall School of Business is where I have to be. The opportunity to interact with other like-minded globalized individuals excites me. To learn about new cultures and listen to their ideas regarding business is a rare opportunity indeed. This networking environment, coupled with the relevant educational curriculum will surely equip me with the pertinent skills to fulfill my aspirations of improving the quality of human life throughout the globe.
